Annual event between teams of injured U.S. and British servicemen and veterans showcases golf as a level playing field
BIRMINGHAM, ALA., September 20, 2016 – Three Golf Academy of America students and veterans have been selected to participate in the 2016 Simpson Cup at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York. The annual tournament features teams of 13 injured servicemen and veterans from the United States and their British counterparts.
Representing the U.S. team from Golf Academy of America are:
• Ivan Cotto – Golf Academy of America Orlando, 2nd semester student and U.S. Army veteran having served in Operation Desert Storm
• Jason Leap – Golf Academy of America Dallas, 4th semester student and U.S. Air Force veteran having served in Operation Desert Storm
• Jacob Nelson – Golf Academy of America San Diego, 4th semester and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps
“This Ryder Cup-style tournament is a fantastic way to showcase golf and the amazing servicemen and women who play the sport,” said Brad Turner, PGA, Orlando campus director. “Because of golf’s official handicap system, the game is open to people of all abilities and skill levels. It’s an honor to see our students participate in such a great cause.”
The four-day event runs from Sept. 18 – 21, with activities each day. The event culminates with a two-day tournament Sept. 20 – 21.
Competitors involved in the Simpson Cup are all members of the On Course Foundation, for which the Simpson Cup raises awareness and funds. On Course Foundation offers U.S. and British servicemen and women the chance to play golf as a means to restore self-confidence and a sense of purpose following an injury sustained during service.
