ORLANDO, Fla. (Oct. 10, 2016) – Accomplished teaching professional Rudy Duran, Tiger Woods’ very first golf coach, is scheduled to appear as a guest instructor on Golf Channel’s Morning Drive October 12 and 13.
The popular daily morning show airs from 7-9 a.m. Eastern.
Duran, director of instruction at three Central California golf courses-Morro Bay (Morro Bay), Chalk Mountain (Atascadero) and Dairy Creek (San Luis Obispo)-is one of the inaugural coaches in Golf Channel Academy (GCA), a dedicated network of teaching facilities. Select Golf Channel Academy coaches are being invited to appear on the network’s news and instruction shows, including The Golf Fix and School of Golf; Duran is making his first appearance on Morning Drive.
“I’m excited to be appearing on Morning Drive,” said Duran, a 44-year teaching professional and long-time PGA member who is best known for mentoring a young Woods from ages 4-10. “It’s been a great experience to be a part of the Golf Channel Academy network of coaches, and I look forward to sharing some of my favorite lessons with the viewers at home.”
Woods, a California native and 14-time major champion, is scheduled to make his much-anticipated return to the PGA Tour later this week in the Safeway Open at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, Calif. Woods’ last PGA Tour start came at the Wyndham Championship in August 2015.
A U.S. Kids Golf Certified Coach, Duran wrote about some of his experiences with Woods in In Every Kid There Lurks a Tiger, a book designed to help parents teach their children the fundamentals of playing golf. He was awarded the PGA Tour’s Card Walker Award in 2000 for his contributions to junior golf, and the 2004 Southern California PGA Junior Golf Leader Award.
An accomplished player, Duran turned professional in 1971 and played for a short time on the Canadian Tour (1976-’77) and PGA Tour (1977-’78). After his playing career was over, he turned his energies to coaching, and golf course management and design. Duran was a past president of the Southern California PGA Northern Chapter.
