SCOTTSDALE, AZ – OCTOBER 12, 2016 – Global Golf Management Group, a leading provider of competitive amateur golf events across the United States, today announced that the Sir Elford Cup will be held February 2-4, 2017 at McCormick Ranch Golf Club in Scottsdale, AZ. The format is a Two-Man team, 54-hole match play tournament. Round one is a modified Four Ball (Best-Ball), Round two is Foursomes (Alternate shot), and Round three is Singles matches.
The first Sir Elford Cup was played in San Clemente, California in 1986 between a team made up of friends from San Clemente and San Diego. On that day a match was scheduled to emulate the Ryder Cup and the rest is history. In the end San Diego won the first ever Sir Elford Cup. As they sat around after the tournament swapping stories of the three-day event, little did they know that what they created would eventually become a national tournament that would include teams from all over the country representing their towns and golf courses.
In the late 90’s and early 2000’s the Sir Elford Cup was played at the end of each season when the American Amateur Tour had it’s annual season ending championship week. The Sir Elford Cup was one of the most, if not the most, popular event of the year. Every fall a few dozen teams would show up a couple of days prior to the AAGT National Championship to compete in the Sir Elford Cup. This went on until 2009 but after the Golf Channel purchased the AAGT they made a decision to change the name and eventually ended up dropping the event all together. Since that time the Sir Elford Cup has been locked away and remained dormant until now. This upcoming year the trophy is coming out of the closet and the event is being revived with an even better tournament format than ever before with 64 teams competing for a National Team Championship.
