After renovation, new fairways, bunkers, and tees in place for 25th annual Stocker Cup
Carmel, Calif. (Oct. 17, 2016) – The recent renovation of The Preserve Golf Club is now complete and makes this highly regarded Tom Fazio golf course even better as it prepares to host the 25th Annual Stocker Cup.
With new fairways, bunkering and tees that have improved course conditioning, strengthened shot-making, and reduced water consumption, the majestic Preserve Golf Club in the Santa Lucia Mountains not far from iconic Carmel-by-the-Sea is positioned to maintain its stature as one of the Top 100 courses in America.
The most significant aspect of the recently completed renovation was changing The Preserve’s fairways from bent grass to Santa Ana Hybrid Bermudagrass. The new fairways will create firmer and faster playing conditions throughout the year, while providing a consistently superior playing surface and new elements to strategy and shot-making.
In addition, The Preserve’s new fairways are projected to require approximately 30 percent less water, an important savings for both the community and environment. The United States Golf Association recently highlighted the Preserve’s fairway renovation for improving playing conditions and conserving water. USGA ARTICLE
The Preserve’s bunkering also received a complete renovation. Every bunker has been reshaped and reconditioned to add to the overall beauty, playability and strategic challenge of the course. Also, additional tee boxes have been created on many holes to provide new shot choices and challenges for both low and higher handicap golfers.
“These improvements to the golf course have created an even more exciting and enjoyable experience, consistent with The Preserve Golf Club being among the top courses in the country,” said John Pietro, the Director of Golf at The Preserve. “In terms of conditioning, aesthetics, and shot-making, The Preserve has never been better. We are excited to see how the competitors in the Stocker Cup handle the changes. This should be one of the best years in tournament history.”
The Stocker Cup (www.stockercup.com) was founded in 1991 to honor the memory of Peter Stocker, recognized as the man behind the creation of Santa Lucia Preserve and considered “the quintessential amateur golfer.” The tournament is recognized as one of the most prestigious mid-amateur golf events in the country. Past champions include Brandt Snedeker, Randy Haag, and two-time defending champion, Brady Exber.
This year’s event celebrates the Stocker Cup’s 25th anniversary. The tournament was played from 1991 to 1999 at Pebble Beach before moving to The Preserve.
The Preserve Golf Club, a perennial Top 100 Golf Digest rated course, is located within the Santa Lucia Preserve, a private community of only 300 home sites situated on 20,000 acres – approximately the size of Manhattan – and the only community in America with a perpetually endowed, 18,000-acre nature conservancy. In the heart of the Monterey Peninsula, The Santa Lucia Preserve provides its resident and members with a range of recreational opportunities second to none, while offering a unique ethos of community, culture, and conservation.
