LAKE MARY, FL (January 11, 2017) – Timacuan Golf & Country Club will host some of the best junior golfers in the country this weekend in the Foley Performance Academy at EaglesDream Junior Championship.
The American Junior Golf Association will conduct the 54-hole competition for players aged 12 to 18 on Saturday through Monday on the highly acclaimed Ron Garl layout. The public is invited to watch the action free of charge. Tee times for the 78-player field will start at 8 a.m. each day.
“For the third straight year we are thrilled to showcase our golf course and our outstanding Mini-Verde greens to some of the best players in the world,” said Timacuan Golf Director Rick Smith. “Since re-opening in September of 2013, our greens have received rave reviews for their consistency. I know these top players will find the course to their liking.”
The Foley Performance Academy at EaglesDream is located at Timacuan, and is headed by world-renowned instructor Sean Foley. Many of the top juniors in the world have honed their skills at the academy, some of which will be competing in this tournament. They include Robin Wang, Aden Ye, Yuancheng Liu and Amy Zhang.
Nine players on Golfweek’s top 100 boys and girls rankings are competing in this tournament, headed by No. 22 Aden Ye and No. 45 Mimi Chen, 9th grader at Lake Mary Prep who won the State 1A championship in 2016.
Timacuan has been among the most popular courses in Central Florida since opening in 1988. It has been ranked as high as No. 14 in Florida, and has hosted dozens of national and international competitions. U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell is among its fans.
“I really enjoyed the golf course,” said McDowell, after playing in the $10,000 Timacuan Scramble in January of 2013. “It is a great layout with a links-like feel to it. It can be testy in places if you get off the beaten path, but it is a very fair course.”
Another fan of Timacuan and the Mini-Verde greens is former world long drive champion David Mobley.
“I was so impressed with the greens,” said Mobley. “The new Mini Verde greens really force you to golf your ball. You have to put it in the right places on these greens. It’s an excellent layout, and these new greens make you play the golf course the way it is suppose to be played.”
Timacuan Golf & Country Club is a semi-private facility, open to the public but also offering outstanding membership packages. For information, call 407-321-0010, ext. 2, or visit www.golftimacuan.com.
