PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FLORIDA, USA (March 7, 2017) Professional golfer Jeff Klauk of Perfect Golf Event helped tame the new drivable par-4 12th hole on THE PLAYERS Course at TPC Sawgrass on Tuesday, winning $15,000 for the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida during The Charity Challenge as a part of media day for THE PLAYERS Championship. Next comes Klauk’s debut event, the Athletes vs. Epilepsy $1 Million Shootout on Monday, April 10.
Jason Day, the defending PLAYERS Championship winner, hit 10 drives on Tuesday from the 300-yard tee for each of the 10 participating charities with none hitting the green on the new hole, which was reworked to add excitement to the early part of the back nine for THE PLAYERS. Those drives left representatives of each charity to play the second shot from all around the green area. Day’s drive for Klauk and the Epilepsy Foundation found the right greenside pot bunker. Klauk blasted out to 7 inches to clinch first place.
In addition to winning $10,000 from THE PLAYERS Championship, Day also announced that he was donating $5,000 to each of the 10 charities. That gave the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida an immediate $15,000 donation.
“Being able to assist the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida made it such as great day,’ Klauk said. “Having Jason there to provide additional support was also tremendous. He is a fantastic defending champion and a giving person for THE PLAYERS. This was a great opportunity to raise awareness and funding for epilepsy research and gives us great momentum entering the tournament at Palencia.”
The donation to the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida fell less than five weeks before Klauk and Perfect Golf Event hold the first Athletes vs. Epilepsy $1 Million Shootout (AthletesVsEpilepsyGolf.com) on the day after the completion of the Masters Tournament. The event is scheduled for The Palencia Club near St. Augustine, Fla.
The unique format, organized by Perfect Golf Event, includes a course setup of nine regulation holes and nine par 3s, with each par 3 offering $10,000 for a hole in one. The nine players who are closest to the hole on the designated par 3s will qualify for a day-ending shootout where a hole in one earns $1 million. The payout includes $500,000 to the winning individual and $500,000 for the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida and Athletes vs. Epilepsy. If there is no hole in one in the shootout, the player closest to the hole wins $1,000.
Entry fee for the event is $400 per person, with teams assembled in fivesomes. There will also be a long-drive contest and a putting contest where if someone makes a 50-foot putt in the finale the prize is 2018 Masters Tournament badges. A group of professional golfers and athletes from other sports are expected to participate and will be announced later.
Klauk, 39, joined Perfect Golf Event in 2016 as the Manager of Tournaments and Events for the new digital platform designed for charitable and sponsored golf tournament organizers, enabling them to raise more money for their causes. Perfect Golf Event’s headquarters are located in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
Klauk’s playing career was derailed by health issues. In April 2012, he underwent brain surgery at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta to deal with the effects of epileptic seizures he first experienced in 2006. He played eight tournaments on the Web.com Tour in 2015.
Klauk grew up in Ponte Vedra Beach, where his father, Fred, was the longtime superintendent at TPC Sawgrass. Klauk and his family reside in nearby St. Augustine at Palencia, a master-planned community with an Arthur Hills-designed golf course. Palencia is located off of U.S. 1 just north of St. Augustine and sits just west of the Intracoastal Waterway (605 Palencia Club Dr., St. Augustine, Fla. 32095).
