Stafford, Va. – For her excellence in teaching and golf instruction, as well as her innovative contributions to golf instruction, Trillium Rose has been named the 2017 MAPGA Teacher of the Year.
Whether it’s volunteering her time with Wounded Warrior Clinics and The First Tee of Washington D.C., or coordinating teaching seminars within the Section, Trillium Rose’s name has been synonymous with quality practice standards and trusted education.
Born on May 10, 1978 to David Sellers and Candy Barr, Trillium entered into a Randloph, Vt. family that loved to play golf. Trillium, her brother Parker and her parents bonded over golf. Her father always kept a set of clubs in the trunk of his car and encouraged the family to stop and “whap out a bucket” of balls whenever their family passed a driving range.
Trillium started playing golf at the age of six. Her father influenced her to play because he made the game so fun. He wasn’t judgmental about how she played, but instead he coached her so that she improved. Trillium played in the Vermont Golf Association tournaments in the summers and played ice hockey in the winter. She was a dedicated lacrosse player throughout college and didn’t get into golf seriously until she graduated. She never had her sights on playing on Tour, but she did love playing the game and especially loved sharing her passion for it through teaching.
In 2003, Trillium made the decision to become a golf professional with her first job at Sugarbush Golf Club in Warren, Vt. She joined the Middle Atlantic PGA while working as a teaching professional at Chevy Chase Club in 2009, shortly after obtaining her PGA membership. She then took some time to obtain her Master’s degree from Teachers College at Columbia University in Motor Learning and Control and now a Certified Teaching Professional and Head Director of Instruction at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland. An innovator and life-long learner, her knowledge of teacher effectiveness, mechanics and practice training have proven highly successful. Trillium has improved the games of over 1,000 individuals who rely on her cutting-edge expertise, and honest, straight- forward approach.
Trillium’s background includes five seasons working for and training under Jim McLean at the Jim McLean Golf School at Doral, focusing on swing mechanics. While there, she worked alongside renowned biomechanist, Dr. Rob Neal and his wife, exercise scientist, Karen Harrison. Countless other professional relationships have influenced her teaching including Dr. Tim Lee, Dr. Richard Magill, Dr. Steve Silverman, Dr. Rick Jensen, Dr. Mark Brodie, Dr. Fran Pirozzolo, and Bob Toski.
Trillium has presented at many National education seminars including but not limited to presenting at the Golf Magazine Top 100 Teachers Summit and the PGA Show, FIT to Win Lectures, hosted by TPI in Orlando, Fla. in January 2016. Within the Section, Trillium has presented at the 2015 East Coast Junior Golf Summit and the 2015 Middle Atlantic PGA Teaching Summit; she has also hosted numerous standalone educational seminars at Woodmont Country Club. On top of presenting, Trillium has been featured on numerous radio shows, appeared on television and has been published in top golf periodicals.
Trillium and her husband Ben just celebrated their two year wedding anniversary and live together in Washington, D.C.
