Scottsdale, Ariz. (March 13, 2017) – The World Golf Village in St. Augustine, Fla., has completed an extensive bunker renovation project on the Slammer & Squire golf course. The six week project was overseen by original Slammer & Squire course designer Bobby Weed, while renovation work was performed by contractor MacCurrach Golf.
The Slammer & Squire course opened in 1998 and was designed by Bobby Weed with consultation from golf legends Sam Snead and Gene Sarazen, for whom the layout was named. The recent bunker renovation project focused on enhancing playability and aesthetics while easing maintenance requirements. A number of bunkers were reduced in size, resulting in increased visibility and more forgiving and larger landing areas. The 18-hole, par 72 course is known for its low-profile design, which showcases the surrounding wetlands and wooded areas.
“It was a great pleasure to be back working at the Slammer & Squire, nearly twenty years after its opening,” Weed said.
In addition to bunker work, a number of other course enhancements were made while the course was closed including cart path repairs, sod work on several holes, tree and brush removal, and cart path edge regrading. Nine holes of the course remained open for play during the renovation project.
“We appreciate Bobby Weed’s support, dedication and outstanding work in overseeing this project,” said Bob Barrett, CEO of Honours Golf, which manages the world-famous facility. “He took one of his great designs from the late 90s and made it more player and maintenance friendly while improving its aesthetic beauty.”
Honours Golf, which manages a collection of resort and private facilities mostly in the southeastern U.S., is a division of Troon.
