Philadelphia, PA, March 20, 2017 – The Maccabi USA Golf Co-Chairs Deborah Adams, Bruce Apple, and Daniel Frankel along with Head Coach Peter Epstein are pleased to announce the Open Golf Team for the 20th World Maccabiah Games, which will take place July 4-18, 2017 in Israel. Maccabi USA will bring a team of more than 1,100 athletes who will join the 8,750 Jewish athletes from 80 countries, participating in 43 different sports.
The athletes on the Open Golf Team representing the United States are Scott Adams of Asheville, NC, Colgate University; Hannah Berman of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, University of West Florida; Joseph Burkinshaw of Germantown, MD, Shepherd University; Zachary Burkinshaw of Germantown, MD, Shepherd University; Ben DuBois of Renton, WA, Gonzaga University; Benjamin Feld of Plymouth Meeting, PA, Drexel University (’13); Julia Hyman of Allentown, PA, Georgetown University; David Lebowitz of Santa Monica, CA, Tulane University (’97); Marni Murez of Manhattan Beach, CA, Boston College; Alexa Popowitz of Boca Raton, FL, Georgetown University; Ashton Silk of Hillsborough, CA, University of San Francisco; Benjamin Smith of Philadelphia, PA, University of Delaware (’09); Julie Steinbauer of Doral, FL, Rollins College; and Sean Wigler of Birmingham, MI, Arizona State University.
The tournament will be held at the prestigious Caesarea Golf Club. Established in 1961 by the Baron de Rothschild Family and rebuilt in 2007 by Pete Dye, Caesarea is located on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea. Caesarea has always been the golf home to the Maccabiah Games. Past gold medalists include Bruce Fleisher (1969), Cory Pavin (1981), and in 2013, Laetitia Beck of Israel, a 2014 Duke University graduate now playing on the LPGA Tour.
Since 1932, over 62,000 athletes have participated in the Maccabiah Games, in a celebration of Jewish Strength and Solidarity. Team USA’s success is not only measured by the medals won, but by the impact that the Maccabiah experience had on their lives as well as the friendships they formed.
