Volvik staff player and two-time Long Drive World Champion Tim Burke won the first official WLDA tour event of 2017 at the East Coast Classic in Charleston, South Carolina.
Different color Volvik golf balls were used by every member of the field of the longest 32 drivers of the golf ball in the world at the WLDA kick-off tour event. Volvik is as the official golf ball of the WLDA and new title sponsor of the Volvik World Long Drive Championship.
Burke was victorious in the final at the East Coast Classic by hitting his Volvik ball 389 yards over the 377 yards put up the 2016 East Coast Classic defending champion Trent Scruggs.
Fellow Volvik staff player Maurice Allen hit the longest ball of the double elimination rounds at 409 yards.
Burke walked away with $10,000 as the first place prize and 800 World Long Drive ranking points. The win is the 2nd long drive victory for Volvik staffer Burke this year after also winning an event in Dubai earlier in March.
“It was great to get my second win of the year,” said Burke. “I’ve been training extra early and extra hard this year and I think it’s paying off. The Volvik golf balls and my Krank Formula 7 were helping me outdistance the field even into a nice headwind. It was a great start to my WLDA season and a nice way for me to get ready for the ultimate prize, my third belt at the Volvik World Long Drive Championship!”
Five Exemptions into the Volvik World Long Drive Championship were also up for grabs this week. Four exemptions were awarded following both Friday and Saturday’s local qualifiers that also took place on site in Charleston.
The longest drive of all events combines was bombed by Landon Gentry, who hit a Volvik ball 456 yards in Round 8 of the Regional Championship Ryan Reisbeck also qualified by hitting a Volvik ball 454 yards, Spencer McDaniel qualified with a 429 yard blast and Scott Kalamar punched his ticket with a 422 yard drive.
