Volvik staff player Bubba Watson finished T5th on the PGA TOUR this week playing Volvik S4 golf balls at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. It was the first year that the Zurich Classic featured a team play format that included two best ball and two alternate shot rounds and Watson teamed up with fellow PGA TOUR player J.B. Holmes.
The duo shot a 64 Sunday to move up 27 spots on the leader board to finish T5th. Five of the eight birdies were produced by Watson on Sunday. In total, 12/17 of the team’s birdies were carded by Watson in the best ball rounds.
The team climbed up the leader board with a 64 in the best ball round Friday, making the cut after posting nine birdies as a team. Watson carded seven of those birdies to lead the team back into contention after a +1 start in alternate shot Thursday.
The momentum carried over to the 3rd round with the former Zurich Classic champion Watson and his teammate for the week, Holmes, shooting a bogey-free 4-under-par 68, tying the low round in the clubhouse.
The two long hitters relied on their putting to score four birdies in the alternate shot format. Watson made the 7-foot birdie putt at the par -5 18th and also putted in the birdie at 13 from seven feet, while Holmes converted the other two birdies from inside eight feet. Watson also sank a 6-foot putt for the par-save at the sixth hole and an 11-foot par-saver at the ninth hole.
This is Watson’s 10th time playing in the Zurich Classic, his first since a T15 finish in 2013. He was a playoff winner in New Orleans in 2011. He finished T26th at the Shenzhen International on the European Tour April 23rd. Watson led after opening the first round with a 66, his best opening round in over a year. Watson made five birdies and an eagle in recording his best opening round since the 66 he shot en route to victory at the Northern Trust Open in February 2016.
