PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (May 8, 2017) – PGA Golf Club – the 54-hole, core facility of the PGA of America – announces its Wanamaker and Dye Courses ranked in the top-25 in Florida in Golfweek’s Best: “State-by-State Courses You Can Play.”
The Wanamaker Course ranked 20th in the publication’s annual rankings of public courses in the Sunshine State, while the Dye Course ascended four spots from last year’s rankings to No. 23.
“We’re thrilled to have our Wanamaker and Dye courses listed in Golfweek’s coveted ranking of best courses in Florida golfers can play,” says Jimmy Terry, General Manager. “These prestigious honors represent our commitment to providing our guests with an extraordinary golf experience.”
Golfweek’s ranking panel consists of 675 voters from seven countries who rely on 10 criteria to rate a golf course, including overall land plan, variety and memorability of golf holes, conditioning and ecology, and the “walk in the park test,” which rates the sense of the course as worthy of spending four hours on it. The number of courses per state varies based on course supply, population and level of play; and the Golfweek rankings include daily-fee layouts and golf courses accessible via resorts.
Considered one of the most scenic layouts in Florida, the Tom Fazio-designed Wanamaker Course seamlessly incorporates the natural habitat, with holes routed around wetlands, through native palmetto and sabal palms, and over subtle slopes. The course recently underwent extensive renovations to its fairways, where Celebration Bermuda – a hybrid strain widely favored for its durability and quick recovery – was planted. The bunker surrounds and faces were re-grassed with Empire Zoysia, and several ornamental species of grass were planted to reframe the holes.
Designed by Pete Dye, the acclaimed Dye Course re-opened this past November following an extensive re-grassing project. Celebration Bermuda was installed on all fairways, all 18 greens were re-grassed with Tifeagle, an Ultra’dwarf Bermuda variety lauded for its improved speed, consistent smoothness and superior color retention, and TifGrand was chosen for the collars. Additionally, putting surfaces were expanded to their original sizes when the course opened in 2000.
