U.S. Open is next up for surging Watson
Volvik staff player Bubba Watson finished T6th at The 41st annual Memorial Tournament playing Volvik’s S4 4-piece Urethane golf ball.
Watson shot 71-68-68-73 for the four day event to finish eight-under-par. The 6th place finish was his best individual finish of the year and the 55th Top 10 finish of his career.
This is his fourth Top 25 at the Memorial in 11 visits to the Memorial and his second Top 10 finish. It’s Watson’s fourth top 25 of the 2017 season in 12 starts and his third Top 10.
Two events ago on Watson’s schedule, he finished T5th at the inaugural team play at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Two events before that, he finished T9th at the World Golf Championships Match Play event.
He also finished T26th at the Shenzhen International on the European Tour in April after leading after the first round. Despite showing signs of championship caliber play, he hadn’t earned a Top 10 in 2017 individual stroke play until this week.
“Every week we’re trying to get in the hunt and have a chance,” said Watson. “Even after the front nine I wasn’t stressed because we knew a couple under or even par, you’re not out of it because this golf course is so demanding. The U.S. Open is right around the corner and they could hold the U.S. Open here right now. So we just have to stay patient and have some fun.”
On Sunday, Watson hit nine of 14 fairways and 11 greens in regulation, gaining 1.543 strokes off-the-tee. He raced out to a three-under start thru six holes, with birdies at holes two, five and six, putting him at the top of the leader board at 12-under-par.
Following a bogey at hole seven from a three-putt and a bogey on eight and 12 after failed sand saves, he 2-putted the par-5 15th for birdie and then dropped two more strokes with failed sand saves at 16 and 17.
On moving day at the Memorial Tournament Saturday, Watson went to 9-under and was in a three-way T3. Watson began the back nine with a birdie-eagle-birdie-birdie run. He then birdied the par-5 15th before losing a stroke at the par-3 16th, “saving” bogey from 12 feet at the dreaded par 3. He saved par at 17 from 6 feet before walking off with birdie-3 at 18 from 18 feet, his second made putt over 12 feet on the round.
“I feel good. It’s always good to have a shot,” said Watson after Saturday’s round. “It will be fun. It’s going to be fun around here. It’s a tough golf course, as we know. It will be a battle.”
Watson played the S4 in white all week at the Memorial. Volvik posted an answer to how Watson chooses his Volvik golf ball color on their Facebook page this weekend. The below is an excerpt from their Facebook page:
Q: Why is Bubba playing a White S4 this week?
A: Bubba chooses the color he is playing on a day to day basis…whatever he’s “feeling” at the moment before he tee’s off.
We never know what color he will choose as he has no obligation to play any color over another. He has switched between the White, Green and Pink S4 all year, with the majority of rounds being Pink and White. (Pink 50%, White 38%, Green 12%)
The S4 white has a blue/pearl coating that intensifies in sunlight. Hence the name White/Color when referring to the white model. Bubba loves the Blue/Pearl and so do we! It stands out against other Urethane balls with its Blue Hue, which is why we’ve always called it “the business man’s color golf ball.”
