JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (June 5, 2017) – Jason Dufner survived a pair of rain delays and a host of challengers to win The Memorial, his fifth career PGA Tour event, by three strokes over Rickie Fowler and Anirban Lahiri of India. Dufner rebounded from a third-round 77 with a 4-under-par 68 on Sunday and his victory allowed him to join Jack Nicklaus as only the second Ohio-born player to win at Muirfield Village Golf Club.
Dufner’s win outside of Columbus yesterday was the third this year by a member of Team Secret Golf and was the second triumph for the 17-member team of Tour professionals in the past month. In November last year, Pat Perez won the OHL Classic at Mayakoba in Mexico and four weeks ago, Brian Harman claimed his second PGA Tour title at the Wells Fargo Championship near Wilmington, North Carolina.
“I’ll always have a close place in my heart for this event, being a champion now,” Dufner said following his victory. “It will be very special for me to look back and know that I’m part of an event that Mr. Nicklaus puts on out here on the PGA Tour”.
“Winning Jack’s (Nicklaus) event means a lot to Jason as he’s from Cleveland, Ohio. The Memorial Trophy will sit nicely with his other trophy from a legend, the 2012 HP Byron Nelson Championship,” said 10-time PGA Tour winner Steve Elkington, the co-founder of Secret Golf. “Everyone who joins the Secret Golf team and tells consumers how they “get it done” seems to be in the hunt on the various Tours every week. I wonder why?”
For Dufner, a former PGA Championship winner, yesterday’s victory marked his first title on the PGA Tour since the 2016 Career Builder Challenge. Team Secret Golf, which includes former major champions Jackie Burke, Steve Elkington, Brittany Lang and Stacy Lewis, now has claimed 110 events collectively on the PGA Tour, LPGA Tour and Web.com Tour.
