Historic Columbus Country Club In Midst Of Golf Course Renovation

June 28, 2017

Columbus, Ohio (June 27, 2017) – Historic Columbus Country Club is in the midst of a two-year golf course renovation project that began in the fall of 2016. The newly renovated front nine recently reopened on May 19th, while the back nine will undergo its renovation transformation after Labor Day 2017. The entire 18-hole renovation and layout will be finished by Memorial Day 2018.

Golf course architect Kevin Hargrave is overseeing the extensive renovation which is focusing on the original design concepts of famed golf course designer Donald Ross and bringing the proper scale back to the Columbus Country Club property. During front nine renovations, 1,000 trees were removed exposing the extensive canvas Ross once worked with. Original lines of play were brought back, while the newly renovated bunkers reflect the style and feel of Ross’s work. Hargrave also incorporated numerous new or repositioned tee complexes making the course more playable for the entire membership. When complete, the new layout will stretch from 5,400 to 7,200 yards.

Managed by Troon Privé, the private club operating division of Troon, Columbus Country Club also boasts a nine-hole executive course along with eight tennis courts, a large swimming pool, spacious clubhouse and a diverse entertainment calendar.

About Columbus Country Club

The grounds of Columbus Country Club were first developed by Orlando A. Miller in 1903 as a horseman’s club with bridle paths throughout the estate. It wasn’t long before the land eventually gave way to the sport of golf. Originally a nine-hole course designed by Tom Bendelow in 1903, the golf course at Columbus Country Club has had the hands of many renown golf course architects involved in its development including Harry Colt, Dick Wilson and Geoffrey Cornish, but it was Donald Ross who had the most influence on the course’s character and overall design. Ross renovated Columbus Country Club several times between 1915 and 1940.

In 1964 Columbus Country Club played host to the PGA Championship. This event saw a thrilling finish between two of golf’s titans, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, along with eventual winner Bobby Nichols. Columbus Country Club has also hosted two PGA TOUR events – the Columbus Invitational in 1946 and 1947, won by Byron Nelson and Bobby Locke respectively.

Columbus Country Club has hosted the Ohio State Amateur four times (most recently in 2004), and was the host course for the 1957 and 1987 Ohio State Mid-Amateur. The historic Donald Ross design will again host the Ohio State Amateur in 2020.
