Volvik was a big part of a historic day for World Long Drive Tuesday at the Mile High Showdown in Denver, Colorado, shown live on Golf Channel.
In addition to all competitors in the event using Volvik’s new VIVID XT matte finish golf balls to set world record after world record, long-time Volvik staff player Maurice Allen captured the men’s open division victory in dramatic fashion, leading to national coverage on SportsCenter and other national media.
Allen won the men’s division in the rain by hitting a 483 yard blast with our VIVID XT golf ball in the quarter finals, a 464 bomb in the semi-finals and a 436 yard shot with a Pink XT hit in the Finals. His ball speed was 223 MPH on the winning shot. He also produced blasts of 429 yards and 417 yards in earlier rounds with the VIVID XT golf ball.
The longest ball of the entire event was 485 yards by Ryan Reisbeck, who ended up finishing 2nd in the men’s division.
Several 500 yard balls were hit at the event but just ended up out of bounds. There has never been a 500-yard drive recorded in a WLDA event or any professional long drive event.
“The VIVID XT is the best ball I’ve ever hit in a long drive competition hands down,” said Allen, the two-time European Long Drive champion with Volvik golf balls. “The way the ball comes off the club face is absolutely unreal.”
Fellow Volvik staffer Phillis Meti set a world record for women’s World Long Drive with a 406 yard blast at the Mile High Showdown. Meti finished 2nd at the event that saw the 400-yard barrier broken by the VIVID XT on four different occasions throughout the day.
In the earlier rounds, four players hit a different color VIVID XT at the same time in the opening rounds. Sandra Carlborg and Chloe Garner advanced to the quarterfinals with a historic set at the Mile High Showdown with drives of 401 and 400 yards, respectively. Moments after they broke the 400 yard barrier, Troy Mullins raised the bar farther with a smash of 402 yards.
Mullins captured the women’s division crown on her second to last ball with a 370+ yard drive in the rain to add to the dramatics in Denver. It was her first ever World Long Drive victory.
Also on hand for the festivities was Volvik staff player and Colorado resident Craig Stadler was on hand to witness the event and was interviewed by Jerry Foltz of the Golf Channel on-air to discuss the booming sport of Long Drive.
Next up for World Long Drive on Golf Channel is the Volvik World Long Drive Championship LIVE from WinStar Casino in Oklahoma September 4th and 5th.
