Former University of Houston All-American golfer and 10-time PGA Tour winner to be inducted in San Antonio this October
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (August 1, 2017) – Secret Golf co-founder Steve Elkington of Australia, a winner of 10 PGA Tour titles including the 1991 and 1997 Players Championship, and the 1995 PGA Championship, will highlight the 2017 class of the Texas Golf Hall of Fame. Elkington, a Houston resident, will be joined in the class by Kelli Kuehne, a two-time U.S. Women’s Amateur champion, noted PGA professional James “Buddy” Cook of San Antonio, and Montford T. Johnson, Jr., who helped shape policy for amateur golf through his role with the United States Golf Association.
Elkington was the first prominent Australian to play college golf in the United States and helped lead the University of Houston Cougars to national titles in 1982, 1984 and 1985 while also earning All-America honors three times. He won 17 career titles as a professional, including 10 on the PGA Tour, claiming four Tour events twice. Elkington posted 10 top-10 finishes in major championships, highlighted by his playoff victory over Colin Montgomerie at the 1995 PGA Championship at Riviera Country Club near Los Angeles.
Elkington is one of only six multiple winners of the prestigious Players Championship, triumphing at TPC Sawgrass Stadium course in both 1991 and 1997. He spent more than 50 weeks in the top-10 of the Official World Golf Ranking from 1995-1998 and was also awarded the Vardon Trophy, given annually by the PGA of America to the player with the lowest scoring average, in 1995. Elkington was also a participant in the first four editions of the Presidents Cup, on the International Team in 1994, 1996, 1998, and 2000.
He joins his mentor, World Golf Hall 0f Fame member Jackie Burke, Jr., an inductee into the Texas Golf Hall 0f Fame in 1979.
“It’s nice to be in the Texas Golf Hall of Fame with my friend and mentor Jackie Burke. I’ve lived longer in Texas than in my home country of Australia so this honor is special to me,” Elkington said. “So many famous players have come from the state of Texas and I’m proud to be included as one of those now.”
The class will be inducted October 9 at historic Brackenridge Park Golf Course and honored at San Antonio Country Club.
