Volvik experienced their fourth victory on the LPGA Tour Sunday at the Ladies Scottish Open. Volvik staff player Mi Hyang Lee played a Volvik S3 golf ball to her second victory on the LPGA Tour in a dramatic comeback that saw her make up nine shots over the last 36 holes.
Lee made seven birdies in the final round, finishing six under par with a round of 66.
“It was really good practice for the British Open and I’ll take a lot of confidence from this win,” said Lee. “It was a really surprise for me, and then just my front nine is amazing, and then I think I got a good start from my first hole. Then just my back nine is a little up-and-down, but I made a lot of putts. I made a lot of good putts and then a good chip shot, too. Just I think hole-by-hole, simple.”
When the 24-year-old Lee arrived in Scotland on Monday, she learned that her golf clubs didn’t make the flight. She had to play a rented set on Tuesday in order to play a practice round. Her actual clubs showed up on Wednesday, the day before the event began.
After two rounds, Lee sat at four over par, tied for 39th and nine strokes off the lead. A 68 in the third round inched her closer, six strokes back of the leader. Lee started off with a 31 on the front-nine and then made eight straight pars before closing with a birdie on the 18th hole. The lone birdie catapulted Lee to her 2nd LPGA Tour victory and the largest comeback in an LPGA event in 2017.
The Ladies Scottish Open was an official LPGA stop for the first time in 2017 after previously being strictly a Ladies European Tour event.
Other Volvik staff players Chella Choi and Pornanong Phatlum both finished tied for 20th at the Ladies Scottish Open, playing Orange S3 and Pink S3 Volvik golf balls, respectively. Newly signed staff player Carly Booth finished 31st with her S4 golf ball. Booth, the 2012 winner of the event, was the top performing Scot of the tournament.
Lee has been playing Volvik since 2012 when she won twice on the Symetra Tour and earned Symetra Tour Rookie of the Year honors. She plays Volvik’s S3 95-compression Urethane golf ball. The S3 has now been a part of three wins on the LPGA Tour.
The victory earned Lee $225,000 and jumped her up to 20th on the official LPGA Tour money list. She has now earned three Top 5 finishes and seven Top 25 finishes in the 2017 season.
“To be a two-time winner on the LPGA Tour at the age of 24 is a big deal and shows that Mi Hyang is one of the brightest young stars in the game” said Volvik USA President Don Shin. “This is now her fourth win with a Volvik golf ball since she started with us on the Symetra Tour. She has learned how to stay focused no matter what is going on around her and has proven time and time again that she is a true champion. I would imagine many more wins will follow.”
Volvik staff players Lee, Choi and Phatlum now rank 20th, 23rd and 36th on the LPGA Tour money list, respectively. Players using Volvik golf balls on the LPGA Tour this season have earned one victory, seven Top 5, 10 Top 10 and 25 Top 25 finishes.
