(HILTON HEAD, S.C.) – The Sea Pines Resort – Hilton Head’s most celebrated golf destination and home of the PGA TOUR’s RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing – announces its new Atlantic Dunes by Davis Love III layout has been named “Golf Course of the Year” by the South Carolina Golf Course Owners Association (SCGCOA).
The SCGCOA selects its course of the year based on criteria established by the National Golf Course Owners Associations (NGCOA): exceptional course quality, exceptional quality of management, outstanding contribution to the community, and significant contribution to the game. This distinction for Atlantic Dunes automatically nominates it for the NGCOA “National Course of the Year” award.
The Links Course at Wild Dunes in Charleston and Man-O-War Golf Club in Myrtle Beach were also finalists in the annual competition. The “Golf Course of the Year” honor has been previously awarded to the resort’s Harbour Town Golf Links (2004) and Heron Point by Pete Dye (2015). Harbour Town was additionally bestowed the Jemsek Award for Golf Course Excellence from the NGCOA in 2005 exalting the world’s best courses.
“In addition to being the ideal complement to Harbour Town and Heron Point, Atlantic Dunes has become a ‘must play’ golf experience on its own merit,” says Cary Corbitt, Vice President of Sports & Operations. “We’re honored to receive this prestigious honor and we cordially invite our guests to come visit us and enjoy playing our 54 holes of world-class golf.”
Earning rave reviews since opening last October, Atlantic Dunes debuted at No. 7 in Golfweek’s “Best Courses You Can Play in South Carolina.” The work of Love Golf Design, Atlantic Dunes is a complete reconstruction and recreation of the resort’s historic Ocean Course, the first on Hilton Head. Love, the victorious 2016 U.S. Ryder Cup Captain, lead architect Scot Sherman and Mark Love fashioned entirely rebuilt holes to accommodate modern shot values and frame scenic corridors.
Most notably, Atlantic Dunes now features a pronounced seaside ambience and Lowcountry feel accented by coquina shells and seaside grasses. The project’s goal to incorporate elements of the surrounding beachfront along with native pines and oaks lining the fairways was realized with stunning results. The course benefits both visually and strategically from restoration of natural sand dunes as well as the creation of new dunes blending seamlessly into the design.
The Sea Pines Resort has just unveiled its trio of “Ultimate Golf Buddy Trip” packages, which include play on its three courses and premier accommodations as well as numerous extras.
