Wins 2017 Catawba Classic with a 395 bomb with a Volvik VIVID XT Golf Ball
Volvik staff player Maurice Allen defeated Trent Scruggs to win the 2017 Catawba Classic and becomes the new No. 1 in the World Long Drive Ranking headed into the season-ending Volvik World Long Drive Championship.
Allen won North Carolina by hitting a Volvik VIVID XT golf ball 395 yards in the match play final.
The victory marks back-to-back WLDA Tour wins for Allen following his victory at the Mile High Showdown in Denver July 25th. He is the #1 ranked long driver in the world with 5850 points earned in the official World Long Drive Rankings.
Allen’s long drive for the event was 396 yards, which he hit in the round robin rounds. The longest drive of the event came from Volvik staff player Kyle Berkshire, who had the longest drive of the event by 24 yards with a 439 yard blast in the round robin rounds. The young phenom Berkshire had drives 439, 415, 410 yards in the event, which were the longest, 2nd longest and 5th longest drives of the event.
In all, 13 VIVID XT golf balls were hit over 400 yards at the Catawba Classic, an event known for its tricky grid.
In the double elimination round, the top drives were 408 yards by Mark Costello, 397 by Jason Eslnger, 395 yards by Ryan Steenberg, 394 yards by Dan McIntosh, 392 yards by Allen, 392 yards by Troy Teal and 392 yards by Dan McIntosh.
The qualifiers for the Volvik World Long Drive Championship produced by the qualifier portion of the Catawba Classic were Jacob Golliday (386), Daniel Moorehead (379), Walter Pusiol (394) and Benjamin Raymond (353).
Allen won the men’s division of the Mile High Showdown just two weeks ago by hitting a 483 yard drive with Volvik’s VIVID XT golf ball in the quarter finals, a 464 bomb in the semi-finals and a 436 yard shot with a Pink XT hit in the Finals. His ball speed was 223 MPH on the winning shot. He also produced blasts of 429 yards and 417 yards in earlier rounds with the VIVID XT golf ball.
“The VIVID XT is the best ball I’ve ever hit in a long drive competition hands down,” said Allen, the two-time European Long Drive champion with Volvik golf balls. “The way the ball comes off the club face is absolutely unreal.”
