Over 4500 golfers (juniors and adults) are now participating in the Operation 36 Golf Program being executed by Golf Professionals at over 150 golf facilities across the US, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. The program was developed over the past 8 years by PGA Professionals, Matt Reagan and Ryan Dailey, and was fully released to golf facilities in 2016. Their mission was to create a better golf onboarding experience for new players, while still providing a long-term framework to progress experienced golfers towards shooting par or better (score of 36) for 9 holes. The program is centered around play and built on the foundation of “challenge point”, which provides golfers with a attainable goals to see success early and often.
How does it work? Instead of starting golfers at the tee-box and progressing them to the green, the program challenges golfers to shoot 36 (par for 9 holes), starting 25 yards from the hole, and then increases the length of the course after that goal is achieved. To help progress golfer’s skills on the course, the program consists of 72 video objectives (spread over 6 levels) that golfers learn from professionals in group academy classes. The combination of learning in a fun social setting and then testing their skills in a nine hole Operation 36 Match is a motivating way to learn the game.
Each golf facility in the Operation 36 Network has their own mobile and web community, where coaches can set up registration for programs, issue objectives and track progress of players through the program. Golfers earn points by completing objectives and by logging their actions to improve their game, such as playing and practicing. Each program has their own activity feed and leaderboard to make getting better at golf, a game in itself. It is fun, it is social, and coaches can measure the golfer’ progress and take action if they see a player is not tracking with their goals.
“Ryan and I are firm believers that to truly grow the game, we need to provide a better onboarding experience and retain the golfers by getting them comfortable and seeing improvement on the course. Although the program was primarily designed to be a long-term coaching program (8-52 weeks), we have also adopted the framework for less committed programs like camps, clinics, and private lessons as well. This excites us because it provides new golfers with an easy on-boarding into the sport, but also covers the question ‘what do I do next to improve?’ Golf Professional’s are the driving force to creating golfers and growing the game. Our team at Operation 36 wants to make this easier on professionals by providing the best programs, software, training, and support platform to create golfers and drive revenue to grow the game.”
