(PHILADELPHIA, Pa.) – After Cobbs Creek Golf Club lost its historic clubhouse to fire last year, players and staff at the popular Billy Casper Golf-managed facility made do with admirable resilience, continuing operations and play while awaiting its replacement, which was recently unveiled.
Golfers playing the iconic club – home to two courses (The Olde and Karakung) – can now enjoy the brand-new building, with fully stocked golf shop, food and bar area, and television to follow the latest golf, sports and news events.
In other club news, the newly renovated miniature golf course at City Line Sports Center re-opened after five years, a welcome complement to the area’s most versatile outdoor entertainment center, which includes a driving range, PGA instruction space, snack bar, picnic area and more.
“We were devastated by the loss of our clubhouse, and it was difficult for our players – Philly’s finest public players – so it’s a joy to see them and their family and friends embracing our full amenities again,” says Justin Smith, BCG Regional General Manager.
Cobbs Creek Golf Club opened The Olde Course in 1916, establishing the sport’s first public venue in the Greater Philadelphia area. It remains a significant, revered piece of Philly golf history and a beloved landmark. Golfweek Magazine recently ranked The Olde Course No. 6 on its list of “America’s Best Municipal Courses”. The Karakung Course was designed to re-create the character and charm of its sister course yet meet the challenge of the everyday golfer.
About Cobbs Creek
The Olde Course at Cobbs Creek is the crown jewel of Philadelphia public courses, the work of renowned golf architect Hugh Wilson, who also designed the famed Merion-East course in nearby Ardmore. Lined with gorgeous, mature trees, the layout takes full advantage of its namesake creek, which meanders throughout and comes into play on the first six holes. The Olde Course boasts a rich, respected past and has hosted countless tournaments including USGA and PGA Tour events. It is noted as a “must play” by locals and travelers alike.
Cobbs Creek also features the 18-hole Karakung Course. Originally designed by Alan P. Corson and A. H. Smith, this track was initially built as an 11-hole layout to lessen the large number of golfers playing The Olde Course. While not long, the 18-hole Karakung Course requires accuracy to find the well-bunkered, medium-sized greens and account for the elevation change.
