WINTERGREEN, Va. (Oct. 23, 2017) – Given the hot streak he is on, the Wintergreen Resort PGA Director of Golf, Geoff Redgrave, might think about heading to Vegas next month.
First, Redgrave warmed up for the 2017 Maryland Senior Open, conducted by the Maryland State Golf Association, by breaking the course record on Stoney Creek Golf Course’s Monocan-Tuckahoe 18-hole routing with a 9-under-par 63 on Sept. 19.
Then in Redgrave’s first appearance in the Maryland Senior Open, he won, firing a two-day total of 137, 3-under par, Oct. 10-11 at Chevy Chase Club in Maryland.
“It just feels great getting my first win at a prestigious event like this among other PGA professionals,” said Redgrave, who defeated former PGA TOUR veteran Jim Estes by one stroke for the sectional title. “It was really satisfying to win on a tough course like Chevy Chase over two days.”
Redgrave’s opening round featured a near mistake-free 18 holes, with no missed fairways and strong putting.
“You have to hit fairways at Chevy Chase,” said Redgrave. “The greens were really fast, but I was confident with the putter and it helped me a lot over the course of both days.”
Misty rain made conditions tough for the second round, with Redgrave making three straight bogeys on the front side. But a difficult up-and-down on the ninth hole propelled him to his strong finish, charging back with a 4-under 31 on the back.
“The up-and-down on nine was a great start to my finish on the back-nine,” Redgrave said. “I had two long birdie putts on holes 14 and 16 and I knew I had a chance at winning.”
Not knowing his position during the round, Redgrave says he just played shot-by-shot with no anxiety and it worked.
The closest Redgrave had come to winning previously was placing second in the 2014 Middle Atlantic PGA Senior Match Play Championship.
During his Monocan-Tuckahoe the course-record round, Redgrave also closed strong, making birdies on the final four holes of Tuckahoe, highlighted by a hole-out from the green-side bunker on No. 8. For the round, Redgrave made 10 birdies and one bogey on the routing, a par 72 that plays to 7,081 yards. The 63 matches PGA TOUR competitor Peter Malnati’s 63 on the Monocan-Shamokin rotation, set during the eGolf Professional Tour event held in 2011.
