Coach Gary Gilchrist is having a year unlike any other golf coach. The seasoned coach with a career that spans more than 20 years has made some big moves in 2017, including going from 47th to 21st on Golf Digest’s 50 Best Teachers In America.
Golf Digest distributed ballots to more than 1,000 golf instructors to identify the top teaching talent both nationally and in every state. By a vote of his peers, Gary Gilchrist was voted 21st in the nation and 9th in the state of Florida.
This move up the ranks comes as no shock when you take a look at Gilchrist’s passion for coaching and growing the game of golf. He continues to lead his team at his namesake academy in Florida, the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy while maintaining a stable of great golfers on PGA and LPGA tours including Morgan Hoffmann, Lydia Ko, Moriya & Ariya Jutanuagarn and Paula Creamer. Additionally, Gilchrist launched the world’s first mobile golf training app with partner Swing-U by SwingxSwing earlier this year.
Gilchrist’s drive doesn’t stop there. In 2017, Gilchrist partnered with his longtime student and LPGA Professional, ShanShan Feng, to launch the ShanShan Feng Golf Academy in China. The new academy trains junior golfers using the Gilchrist system of training and opened for enrollment in May. Coach Gilchrist also attended the Chinese National Games to support the Guangdong Province, coaching the team to a silver medal.
Anyone who spends an afternoon with Coach Gilchrist immediately understands his drive. There is no missing his passion for the game of golf and his desire to constantly learn and improve:
“Golf is always about learning and improving no matter what level of golf you play.” says Gilchrist. “So, It’s always a great honor to be selected by my peers for this Top 50 award. Over the years, I’ve learned a great deal from some of the coaches on this list and consider several as mentors in my career.”
