Highlights include Shepherd’s Rock opening, prestigious accolades, world-class golf academy
(FARMINGTON, Pa.) – Nemacolin Woodlands Resort – the acclaimed luxury resort in the Laurel Highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania – celebrates the end of an exceptional 2017 golf season highlighted by the unveiling of its dramatic new Shepherd’s Rock course.
High atop the Allegheny Mountains, Shepherd’s Rock opened this past July and is the second Pete Dye-designed course at Nemacolin. The 7,151-yard layout presents extraordinary golf in a spectacular setting, as the rolling bucolic terrain provided an ideal canvas for Dye and co-designer Tim Liddy. The course offers plenty of challenge and fun for players of all abilities, and is a perfect complement to the resort’s lauded Mystic Rock course.
GOLF Magazine just named Shepherd’s Rock “Honorable Mention Best New Course You Can Play,” one of many accolades awarded to Nemacolin over the past 12 months. Golfweek tabbed Mystic Rock No. 1 among “Best Courses You Can Play in Pennsylvania,” and Golf Digest ranked Mystic Rock in the top-60 of “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses.” The resort also received the coveted “Editors’ Choice Award” from Golf Digest in the “Best Golf Resorts in the Americas” category.
The resort’s new Nemacolin Golf Academy now offers topnotch instruction with the addition of Golf Digest “Top 100 Teacher,” PGA Professional Eric Johnson, as well as: individual lessons, TrackMan® Golf Radar Solution, SAM Putt Lab, V1 Video System, BodiTracks, one-, two- and three-day golf schools, and one of the leading club-fitting centers on the East Coast. A commitment to growing the game also abounds, with numerous junior and family golf options.
“This golf season was an incredibly exciting time for our members, guests and staff here at Nemacolin,” says Mike Jones, director of golf and recreation. “With the positive momentum of Shepherd’s Rock joining Mystic Rock and giving us two Pete Dye classic courses, plus the growth of our exceptional Golf Academy and membership base, we are very excited about the outlook for 2018.”
This past March, two new additions helped solidify the Nemacolin golf staff team – Justin Collins as head golf professional and Ben Ulevich as golf course superintendent. Collins won two prestigious Tri-State Section tournaments – the Section Championship and the Club Car Match Play Championship. By his section championship win, Collins qualified for the Walter Hagen Cup at the 2018 PGA Professional Championship in California. The top 20 finishers of that tournament will play in the 2018 PGA Championship.
