(HILTON HEAD, S.C.) – The Sea Pines Resort – host of the PGA TOUR’s RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing held on its famed Harbour Town Golf Links – announces its acclaimed Atlantic Dunes by Davis Love III is one of four layouts being considered for the National Golf Course Owners Association (NGCOA) “National Course of the Year Award.”
In August, Atlantic Dunes was named “Golf Course of the Year” by the South Carolina Golf Course Owners Association (SCGCOA). The SCGCOA selects its course of the year based on criteria established by the NGCOA: exceptional course quality, exceptional quality of management, outstanding contribution to the community, and significant contribution to the game. The distinction for Atlantic Dunes automatically nominated it for the “National Course of the Year” award.
Atlantic Dunes recently debuted at No. 7 in Golfweek’s “Best Courses You Can Play in South Carolina.” The coveted “National Course of the Year” award will be presented at the Golf Business Conference on Feb. 6 – 8 in San Antonio.
“Atlantic Dunes is not only the perfect complement to our Harbour Town and Heron Point layouts, it is also a ‘must play’ golf experience on its own,” says Cary Corbitt, Vice President of Sports & Operations. “We’re honored to be competing for ‘Course of the Year’ and we invite our guests to visit us here on Hilton Head and savor our 54 holes of exceptional golf.”
The work of Love Golf Design, Atlantic Dunes is a complete reconstruction and recreation of the resort’s historic Ocean Course, the first on Hilton Head. Love, the victorious 2016 U.S. Ryder Cup Captain, lead architect Scot Sherman and Mark Love fashioned entirely rebuilt holes to accommodate modern shot values and frame scenic corridors.
Most notably, Atlantic Dunes now features a pronounced seaside ambience and Lowcountry feel accented by coquina shells and seaside grasses. The project’s goal to incorporate elements of the surrounding beachfront along with native pines and oaks lining the fairways was realized with stunning results. The course benefits both visually and strategically from restoration of natural sand dunes as well as the creation of new dunes blending seamlessly into the design.
