Director of Golf Instruction is Four-Time Recipient of Prestigious Award
(FARMINGTON, Pa.) – Nemacolin Woodlands Resort – the acclaimed luxury resort in the Laurel Highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania – congratulates its director of instruction Eric Johnson on being named the Tri-State PGA Section Teacher of the Year.
With this honor, Johnson joins legendary Pittsburgh PGA professional Chuck Scally as the only four-time recipients of the Tri-State PGA’s highly coveted award. Johnson, who arrived at Nemacolin just days after his former course, Oakmont Country Club, hosted the 2016 U.S. Open, also received the section’s Teacher of the Year award in 2005, 2008 and 2011.
At Nemacolin, Johnson directs the state-of-the-art Nemacolin Golf Academy, which offers topnotch instruction and expert club-fitting. Highlights at the world-class facility include individual lessons, TrackMan® Golf Radar Solution, SAM Putt Lab, V1 Video System, BodiTracks as well as one-, two- and three-day golf schools.
“We are extremely proud of Eric for receiving the Teacher of the Year Award from the Tri-State PGA Section for a fourth time,” says Tom Smith, director of golf and recreation. “His professionalism and passion for golf instruction are the standards of excellence we strive to achieve throughout Nemacolin.”
Recognized by Golf Magazine as a Top-100 teacher since 2011, Johnson is also in the running for the PGA of America’s National Teacher of the Year award. In addition, he is a three-time winner of the Tri-State PGA’s Horton Smith Award, which recognizes PGA professionals for their outstanding contributions to developing and improving educational opportunities for their peers.
Besides the Golf Academy, Nemacolin showcases two extraordinary courses designed by Pete Dye. Shepherd’s Rock opened last July to rave reviews. The 7,151-yard layout presents golf in a spectacular setting, as the rolling bucolic terrain provided an ideal canvas for Dye and co-designer Tim Liddy. The course offers plenty of challenge and fun for players of all abilities, and is a perfect complement to the resort’s lauded Mystic Rock course.
GOLF Magazine named Shepherd’s Rock “Honorable Mention Best New Course You Can Play.” Golfweek tabbed Mystic Rock No. 1 among “Best Courses You Can Play in Pennsylvania,” and Golf Digest ranked Mystic Rock in the top-60 of “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses.” The resort also received the coveted “Editors’ Choice Award” from Golf Digest in the “Best Golf Resorts in the Americas” category.
