Jeff Maynor, PGA, of Ellicott City, MD was awarded the 2018 Bill Strausbaugh Award by the Middle Atlantic Section of The Professional Golfers’ Association (MAPGA). The award was presented to Maynor at Washington Golf & Country Club for his unwavering commitment to mentoring PGA Professionals in the area of employment and club relations.
This award bestows special recognition on a PGA Professional who has shown outstanding integrity, commitment to mentoring his fellow PGA Professionals in improving their employment situations, and involvement in community and charitable activities.
The award couldn’t be more fitting for Maynor as it is named after MAPGA 1989 Hall of Fame Class inductee “Coach” Bill Strausbaugh, former Head PGA Professional at Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
Maynor was the most recently Chair of the Section Employment and Club Relations Committee where he was vital in developing the Section’s first Employment Summit, held at Columbia Country Club. In the summit’s second year, PGA members focused on three main platforms, “get a job”, “enhance their job” and “retire from their job”.
By bringing in industry leaders to share their wisdom, knowledge and best practices, the summit became a crucial resource for other Sections who want to be leaders in the area of Employment and Club Relations to leverage.
Maynor has mentored several golf professionals who have progressed through the program and obtained their Class “A” status.
It is important to Maynor that from the very beginning of a PGA professionals’ career, they understand what it means to wear the PGA logo and the responsibility associated with calling themselves an “Expert in the Game and Business of Golf.”
He discusses with all of his assistants, their reputation as PGA members and the other 28,000 men and women who claim the title.
Maynor just completed his term as President of the Northern Chapter of the Middle Atlantic Section and had been on the Section Board of Directors for the past six years. He has been active on various Section Committees such as previous Chair of the Section Communications Committee and the Player Development Committee. During his time on the Board, Maynor has been readily available for meetings, Section events, player development functions and consumer events.
He also proves to be an active proponent of the growth and cultivation the game of golf.
For more than 20 years Maynor has served the MAPGA and his community as the Head Professional and Director of Golf at the University of Maryland Golf Course.
He has hosted numerous Section events during his tenure at the University of Maryland which includes hosting two annual MAPGA Junior Tour events each year, the Cherry Blossom Classic, a Peggy Kirk Bell event for junior girls, a local qualifier for Drive, Chip and Putt as well as having a team in their local PGA Junior League. He serves on the Board for The First Tee of Howard County.
Maynor and his staff feel it is their duty to support junior golf in addition, to hosting the Section Qualifiers and other Section events for PGA professionals.
As Maynor wears his PGA badge with pride, he considers it his civic and charitable responsibility to give back to the community anyway he can.
The golf course annually hosts a number of golf clinics to support the local community; which include Dream For Kids Foundation, Sigma Pi Phi Professional Fraternity, the Chinese Embassy, Australian Embassy and Engineers Without Borders.
He is also involved with Special Olympics and has assisted in coaching athletes, hosting clinics and offering his facility for local skills and team play competitions.
Maynor received a Bachelor in Animal Science from North Carolina State University and Masters in Animal Nutrition from Clemson University. He earned his PGA Membership in 1992.
Maynor takes every opportunity he has to share his love for the game with local groups and organizations.
Most of all he takes every opportunity to make his family proud. He met his wife Wendy, while giving her a golf lesson. They have been married for 18 years and have two children, Lauren (16) and Jarrett (15).
