Kilmarlic Golf Club on the Outer Banks opens three of 18 new on-site cottages. Thirteen cottages will surround a 5,000-square foot, lighted putting green, with five others set on a pond. In addition to the putting green, there is also now a four-hole Short Course, offering a quartet of par-3 holes that play between 27 and 40 yards.
OUTER BANKS, NC (March 2018) — Kilmarlic Golf Club announces the opening of three new cottages, among 18 total new cottages being built on property.
The new cottages are positioned just inside the Club entryway along the main US-158 highway artery. Positioning has been a major part of Kilmarlic’s success since its debut in 2002. The Club is located five miles west of the Wright Brothers Bridge that connects the mainland to the Outer Banks.
For vacationing golfers staying on the beach side of the bridge, Kilmarlic is easily within reach. “In 10 minutes,” long-time Director of Golf Bryan Sullivan likes to say, “You can have your toes in the ocean.”
With very few hotel accommodations on the Currituck County mainland, Kilmarlic’s new cottages will be a welcome addition.
The cottages are two bedrooms, each with its own bath, along with a loft that has two more twin beds, meaning a total of six golfers or a family can comfortably stay in one cottage. Three cottages are now open and construction should soon begin on the remaining 15 units.
Thirteen of the cottages are designed around a 5,000-square foot, lighted putting green, with five others set on a small pond. In addition to the putting green, there is also now a four-hole Short Course, offering a quartet of par-3 holes that play between 27 and 40 yards. The 1,000-square foot greens on the Short Course are surrounded by small bunkers.
“Golfers will love it,” Sullivan said. “They can walk right out the front door and they are right on the Short Course. They can make some bets and go out there and play.”
Kilmarlic has been buoyed by the success of its Club Cottage, which enjoyed its best year ever in 2017. The Club Cottage offers four comfortable bedroom suites with master baths, a large adjoining living area and fully equipped kitchen, and is picturesquely perched adjacent to the clubhouse, practice area and first tee box. Kilmarlic also has on site a health club and swimming pool, along with basketball and tennis courts.
“We’ve been very, very busy,” said Sullivan, a former North-South Amateur champion and an All-American at the University of North Carolina with teammate Davis Love III.
“That’s another reason we’re building these cottages,” he said. “People just love staying right here on property and they love the golf course. It’s worked out well.”
In addition, in June 2017 a brand-new, $47-million water park called H2OBX opened directly next door to Kilmarlic. “They did a great job with it,” Sullivan said. “It’s a beautiful water park. They’ve gotten a lot of great feedback. People loved it. They got a lot of positive energy from this new attraction.”
The Kilmarlic accommodations are not just for golfers. The Club often books week-long rentals before families check into their houses on the island. For golf groups the Club also offers breakfast and will host occasional pig-pickins.
“With these cottages it’s going to be a really neat little community development,” Sullivan said. “We have two-night minimum stays here, but they are great for two- or three-night, short getaways. In the summertime it’s a great spot for families.”
