WESTHAMPTON BEACH, New York (May 16, 2018) – The Academy of Golf Art (academyofgolfart.org) exhibition, The Academy of Golf Art: Artists of the Game, on view at the Morris Museum of Art, in Augusta, Georgia, has concluded. The successful exhibition, in honor of the Academy’s 15th anniversary, took place Feb. 24-May 13, including Masters week, and was seen by many golf-loving attendees as well as numerous viewers to whom golf art was a new discovery. The exhibition coincided with the 25th annual Morris Museum Gala.
“The Academy of Golf Art is very proud of its three-month exhibit at the Morris Museum of Art,” said George Lawrence, president of the Academy. “It truly was a pleasure working with the museum’s staff, who were uniformly professional and friendly.”
Featuring the Academy’s member artists only, The Academy of Golf Art: Artists of the Game was the Academy’s first-ever comprehensive exhibition, with every member artist represented. Works displayed included sculpture; paintings in oil, pastel, watercolor and casein; and photography.
The exhibition’s opening reception, on March 8, featured Dr. Robert Jones IV, grandson of legendary golfer Bobby Jones. His presentation included stories about the founding of Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament, as well as anecdotes about his father, grandfather and longtime Augusta National Chairman Clifford Roberts. A number of Academy member artists and staff were present at the well-attended reception.
Works on display at the exhibition were by member artists Richard Chorley – Hertfordshire, England; David Coolidge – Naples, Fla.; Glenn Davis – Hurst, Texas; Leslie B. DeMille (deceased, 2017); Dom Furore – Traverse City, Mich.; Linda Hartough – Okatie, S.C.; George T. Lawrence Jr. – Westhampton Beach, N.Y.; Brad Pearson – Holdrege, Neb.; and Noble A. Powell III – Port Hueneme, Calif.
“It was a great pleasure for all of us here at the Morris Museum of Art to present The Academy of Golf Art: Artists of the Game,” said Kevin Grogan, director and curator of the Morris Museum of Art. “Not surprisingly in this golf-crazed community, the exhibition attracted record numbers of visitors, and everyone who saw it seems to have been completely taken with the work of the talented members of the Academy.
