Charleston, SC: The National Alliance for Accessible Golf (the Alliance) is pleased to announce a new partnership with Pin Flags and More that will support the Alliance mission of “increasing participation of individuals with disabilities in the game of golf” through the introduction of the Access Flag for golf carts.
Historically, the blue, sometimes red “handicap flag” has been used to identify golf carts with added “access” to areas of the golf course to facilitate play, a practice very valued by the large community of golfers with disabilities. The Alliance and Pin Flags and More are encouraging golf courses to help us share a new, welcoming message … Access.
Key elements of increasing participation in golf by people with disabilities of all ages is accessibility and providing a welcoming environment. These factors contribute directly to inclusion in the social framework of the game.
Based on a 2018 study by the National Golf Foundation, there are more than 14 million individuals with disabilities who identified themselves as interested in golf programs for the disabled. Of those only 600,000 reported current engagement in golf activities. A larger group, more than 6 million, reported they had played golf in the past but, due to their disability, no longer participate.
The Alliance and Pin Flags and More encourage golf course operators to help promote and support a new message of access and inclusion through use of a green “Access Flag.” Proceeds from the sale of these flags will go directly to the Alliance to further support its mission of access and inclusion.
Alliance Executive Director, Dave Barton, PGA, explains, “Every step, big or small, can make a difference in the message of accessibility and inclusiveness. The “Access Flag” versus a “handicap flag” simply represents a new, and more appropriate way to communicate and show a commitment to support the inclusion of golfers with disabilities at your club. This partnership also directly supports our mission as Pin Flags and More will donate proceeds of each sale to the Alliance contributing to grant distributions and our support to the golf industry as an education and resource center.”
