During the PGA Show this past January, Jim Beatty Golf Ventures and the African American Golfer’s Digest conducted a survey of the attendees of the Diversity Roundtable. This is believed to be the first ever study of African Americans concerning golf preferences.
There were 226 people in attendance which was a great gathering of all people, but the consensus of the roundtable organizers was that at least 75% – 80% were African Americans. So, these results and responses should be viewed in that vein. The attendees came from 74 cities and 26 states, so this was a very good mix. Perhaps the only skew is that these folks were somehow involved in the golf industry and not just recreational golfers.
The survey instrument contained 14 questions with a couple being multipart queries.
The highlights of the results were :
- 67% MALE
- 33% FEMALE
- 3 YEARS IS THE AVERAGE AGE
- 8% HAVE INCOMES OVER $100,000
- 69 % HAVE BEEN PLAYING FOR OVER 10 YEARS
- 60% PLAY 20 OR MORE ROUNDS PER YEAR
- 30% SPEND OVER $5,000 ANNUALLY OF GOLF
- 14% SPEND OVER $10,000 ANNUALLY ON GOLF
- 47% TAKE 1-3 TRIPS ANNUALLY
