ALPINE COUNTRY CLUB COMPLETES COURSE RENOVATION PROJECTS
As the golf season moves into full swing in the Mountain West, Alpine Country Club, located approximately 30 miles south of Salt Lake City in Highland, Utah, recently completed numerous golf course enhancement and renovation projects. Projects included the renovation and modernization of golf course bunkers, new cart paths, and enlarging and improving the existing practice range and putting green. John Fought Design oversaw the project while Duininck Golf was the contractor responsible for construction.
Modernization of the course’s bunkers included rebuilding bunkers using theBetter Billy BunkerTM method which provides a technically advanced drainage and liner system, while providing optimal playing conditions much deeper into the life of the bunker. Top golf courses around the nation including Hazeltine National, Sage Valley and Muirfield Village have adopted the Better Billy Bunkers. Fought oversaw the repositioning of select bunkers, eliminated trees in problem areas, and added new tee boxes on holes 5, 7, 9, 12 and 14.
“The bunker renovation has really improved the look and design of Alpine Country Club,” said Jake Ebner, superintendent, Alpine Country Club. “Having the Billy Bunker liners will give our members more consistent bunkers and greatly extend the life of the white sand. We have very rocky soils at Alpine and have dealt with a lot of rock and soil contamination in the past. The new liners will also double the life expectancy of the bunkers.”
As part of the renovation, Alpine’s practice range tee area and practice putting green were expanded to accommodate the club’s growing membership, while allowing for the use of drivers/woods from a new matted hitting area. The practice range tee area was expanded to 22,000 square feet (an increase of 37 percent), leveled and re-sodded. Plus, a new TurfHound artificial tee surface was added to the back of the practice tee providing members the versatility and feel they desire when practicing year round. The new 8,000 square-foot practice putting green is 78 percent larger than the previous green.
“These course and practice facility improvements have increased the value of being a member of Alpine,” said Neil Maurer, general manager, Alpine Country Club. “We took a close look at our club strengths and continued to improve upon one of the best-conditioned golf courses and most versatile practice facilities in the state of Utah. These course improvements are especially exciting for our current Members and have cemented our position as one of the premier private clubs in the Mountain West.”
New and improved brushed concrete cart paths were also added throughout the facility and strategically re-routed to better accommodate golfers.
