Lockwood Folly Country Club to Host Women’s Southern Golf Association Amateur and Mid-Amateur Championships.
Top amateur golfers from throughout the South will be at Lockwood Folly Country Club in Holden Beach, NC June 3-7, 2019, to compete in the Women’s Southern Golf Association Amateur and Mid-Amateur Championships.
Among the players who have won the coveted Southern Amateur title are current LWGA major winners Lexi Thompson and Stacy Lewis. Collegiate standouts Mika Liu (Stanford), Alex Wright (Ohio State) and Sierra Brooks (Florida) are also recent winners of the prestigious event. Golf Digest assistant editor Hally Leadbetter is also a former Amateur Champion.
The WSGA has a long and storied history, with the first champion crowned in 1911. Two-time Southern Amateur winner Louise Suggs (1947 and 1941) was one of the founders of the LPGA.
The Mid-Amateur Championship is a new event begun by the WSGA in 2015. Among the winners of this event, which is for players 25 and older, is Laura Coble of Augusta, GA, who is also a former winner of the Amateur title. The past two Mid-Amateur winners, Susan West of Tuscaloosa, AL and Tanna Richard of Fort Smith, AR, will likely be in this year’s field vying for a second championship.
“The picturesque Lockwood Folly golf course will be an awesome setting for our championships this summer,” said WSGA President Janie Carpenter of Dallas, TX. “We are anticipating a stellar group of competitors in each tournament, including some of the top collegiate and junior players from around the South. We encourage the membership and the community to join us in making this annual event one of our best ever,” added Carpenter.
Lockwood Folly features tree-lined fairways with massive oaks, stately pines and abundant wildlife. The course was designed by Willard Byrd and built in 1988 on a former hunting preserve.
Both the Amateur and Mid-Amateur will feature an opening stroke play qualifying round on Monday, June 3. This will be followed by 4 days of match play with the winners to be decided on Friday, June 7. Admission is free and area residents are encouraged to come out and watch these top amateurs in competition.
The WSGA annually awards a $3500 scholarship to assist deserving females in the 15 southern states and the District of Columbia. This scholarship was begun in the early 1970s and is based on academics and financial need. The scholarship is given for 4 years as long as the recipient maintains her grades.
WSGA board member and Lockwood Folly member Myrna Robinson is the Tournament Chairman. Lockwood Folly Country Club Host Chairman is Gayle Todd and Local Publicity Chairman is Lynne Borden.
