CARLSBAD, Calif. – Aviara Golf Club is set to host the Kia Classic, March 22 – 28, the fourth event on the 2021 LPGA schedule. Aviara Golf Club Grounds Superintendent Kevin Kienast and his team have the award-winning course ready to challenge the 144-player field that includes the top three golfers on the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings: Jin Young Ko of Korea; Sei Young Kim of Korea; and Nelly Korda of the United States.
Located at Park Hyatt Aviara Resort, Golf Club & Spa, Aviara Golf Club is the only coastal California course designed by Arnold Palmer. The 7,007-yard course (played at 6,609-yards for the Kia Classic) is secluded amid 200 acres of verdant rolling valleys, overlooking the Batiquitos Lagoon nature preserve with picturesque hillsides and native wildflowers. Named one of the top courses in California by Golfweek in 2020, Aviara Golf Club is well-known for its lush landscaping, beautiful flower beds and gorgeous scenery.
With the 2020 Kia Classic cancelled due to Covid-19, this year’s tournament marks the eighth time in the last nine years that Aviara has hosted the event. Due to the pandemic, spectators will not be permitted on site for the 2021 competition. Therefore, the best way to catch the golf action and the beauty of Aviara is through Golf Channel’s broadcast and streaming coverage.
Nasa Hataoka will look to defend her 2019 Kia Classic title, which was her third victory on the LPGA Tour. The then 20-year-old Japanese player closed with a 5-under 67 for a three-stroke victory over playing partner Inbee Park, top-ranked Sung Hyun Park, Jin Young Ko, Azahara Munoz and Danielle Kang.
The golf course is part of Park Hyatt Aviara, a Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five Diamond resort, which reopened in October 2020 following a $50+ million total transformation. Visitors experience an elevated guestroom and suite product, new restaurant and bar concepts, 200,000 square feet of upgraded indoor and outdoor meeting and event spaces, as well as a dramatic redesign to the resort’s striking lobby entrance, spacious public areas, and new pool offerings, now with seven distinct pool experiences. Among the new dining concepts is signature restaurant, ember & rye, helmed by acclaimed chef Richard Blais. The re-imagined culinary experience specializes in vintage steaks and fresh seafood with a classic California design. There are also two Topgolf Swing Suites, an immersive social experience offering guests of all ages access to a premier lounge while enjoying casual fare, refreshing beverages and lively music. With a floor-to-ceiling screen and a selection of virtual games, the Topgolf Swing Suite delivers a one-of-a-kind simulation that is fun for golf enthusiasts and non-golfers alike. Guests can also enjoy the lounge’s billiards table or catch a game on one of the many televisions.
