BALTUSROL GOLF CLUB DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTOR RECOGNIZED BY GOLF DIGEST

Matt Wilson Among “Best Young Teachers in America”

Springfield, New Jersey – Director of Instruction Matt Wilson, 35, has been honored by being included among the “2021-2022 Best Young Teachers in America” named by Golf Digest Magazine.

Wilson joined the Baltusrol Golf Club staff in April of 2020 after serving as a coach of Golf Canada’s Junior Girls Team. He was previously recognized by Golf Digest among the Best International Teachers.

“Matt is an incredible instructor, and we are pleased that he has been included for the second time in this special group by Golf Digest,” said Baltusrol General Manager and Chief Operating Officer Kevin Vitale. “He is extremely creative in his teaching approach and is well respected by our members.”

Wilson’s philosophy on golf instruction is about consistent improvement, particularly with the more established, invested player. He relies heavily on sports science and sports psychology, having done graduate work in high-performance coaching.

“I’m very fortunate to work with a golf savvy and golf-focused membership,” said Wilson. In addition, he said “the Performance Center at Baltusrol is a very popular building where we continue to make enhancements that ensure the facility is world-leading and world-class.”

Founded in 1895, Baltusrol has been synonymous with American championship golf since 1901, hosting 16 USGA Championships and two PGA Championships, with more on the schedule. This continued commitment reflects Baltusrol founder Louis Keller’s intention to create the leading golf club for the leading city in the country.

In 2014, Baltusrol Golf Club became one of only four golf course properties in the country to be named a National Historic Landmark by the United States Department of the Interior and the National Park Service based on its stunning Tudor Revival clubhouse and dual courses, the first of their kind, which were designed and improved by A.W. Tillinghast from 1918-1935.

The Performance Center includes four indoor bays (two teaching bays equipped with Trackman and Swing Catalyst software, and two, member practice bays equipped with Trackman). Additionally, there is a full golf simulator room, club fitting studio, putting green with PuttView technology, and a putting platform with Sam PuttLab.

The two-tiered practice range has 26 stations on the lower tee and 15 on the upper. In addition, there are several short game practice areas, a long iron practice area, and four practice putting greens.

After a year-long restoration led by renowned golf course architect Gil Hanse, the Lower Course at Baltusrol Golf Club will reopen to members in May. The Lower Course has already hosted 10 major championships—4 U.S. Opens, 3 U.S. Amateurs, 2 PGA Championships, and 1 U.S. Women’s Open—and after this restoration is ready to welcome its first KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in 2023 and its third PGA Championship in 2029.
