Whittle Springs Named ‘No. 4 Most Improved Course in U.S.’
Knoxville’s First Public Course Has Storied 75-Plus Year History
Billy Casper Golf (BCG) – the respected and innovative management partner of nearly 150 golf courses, country clubs and resorts in 29 states – is proud to announce a recent award bestowed upon Whittle Springs Golf Course in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Whittle Springs was named, “No. 4 Most Improved Golf Course in the U.S.” by Golf Advisor for 2018. Owned by Golf Channel, Golf Advisor is a leading source for course information compiled by golfers and a respected panelist of industry writers.
“Billy Casper Golf and the City of Knoxville have established a mutual commitment to improving the golf course and elevating the great experience,” says Rusty Howell, general manager, Whittle Springs. “We look forward to continue being a positive steward for the greater Knoxville community for years to come.”
The 114-acre Whittle Springs Golf Course was built by Whittle Springs Resort Hotel in 1918, then sold to the city of Knoxville in 1930, making it Knoxville’s first municipal course. After the city made changes to the golf course, the scenic layout began hosting the Knoxville City Amateur Championship in the 1930s, and continues to host the prestigious event.
The classic design features Champion Bermuda greens and Bermuda fairways. Whether playing from the par-71, 4,781-yard front tees or the par-70, 5,729-yard back tees, Whittle Springs offers multiple ways to enjoy the charming course.
“Whittle Springs has been a staple of the Knoxville community for over 75 years,” says Dan Zimmer, vice president of operations for Billy Casper Golf. “We are happy to be a part of their recent success and look forward to a sustained long-term partnership with the City of Knoxville to continue providing an exceptional golf experience to residents.”
In 2019, Billy Casper Golf is celebrating its 30th anniversary of building and refining the strongest operating platform in golf. Whittle Springs is the second BCG-managed course in Tennessee, along with Knoxville Municipal Golf Course.
