St. George, Utah – Black Desert Resort has been named the No. 1 golf course in Utah in Golfweek’s recently released “Best Courses You Can Play,” state-by-state rankings. In addition, the Tom Weiskopf and Phil Smith-designed course is ranked number 32 on Golfweek’s prestigious “Top 100 Best Courses You Can Play in the U.S.” ranking, and number 81 on the publication’s “Top 200 Modern Courses” list.
“We are honored to be recognized by Golfweek as the top course in the state after just one year of operation,” said Patrick Manning, managing partner at Black Desert. “We will continue to strive for improvement and excellence every day. With the resort opening in October, just in time for the PGA TOUR’s visit, we have so much more exciting news coming.”
Golfweek also published a lengthy profile of Black Desert on June 10, 2024. In the article titled “Uncommon Ground: New Black Desert in Utah Soars into Golfweek’s Best Course Rankings,” Golfweek Travel Editor Jason Lusk proclaims “The new golf course at Black Desert Resort soaks up the light, a slanted field of ebony lava laced with fairways. The contrasting palette – orange, black, green, blue – plays tricks with the eye, and the whole aesthetic is somewhat overwhelming.” Lusk also goes on to say, “The sky appears to be the limit at Black Desert. And what a sky it is in this southwest corner of Utah.”
Open for play since May 27, 2023, Black Desert debuted at No. 22 on Golfweek’s 2023 ranking of the Top 200 Residential Courses in the U.S., and at No. 26 on Golfweek’s 2023 ranking of the Top 200 Resort Courses in the U.S.. Nestled among red rock mountains and ancient black lava fields, Black Desert is the final golf course designed by the legendary Tom Weiskopf before his passing in August 2022. The course features ancient basalt rock formations artfully integrated into the landscape, creating a striking contrast with the lush green fairways. Recognized as one of the Best New Courses of 2023 by Golf Digest, Black Desert’s 19-hole golf course will host a PGA TOUR event this fall and an LPGA Tour tournament in 2025. Tickets for this year’s Black Desert Championship will open next month. Register for ticket notifications at https://blackdesertchampionshipmens.com.
Every year, Golfweek’s team of course 800 raters surveys more than 3,600 courses – grading each nominated course on the basis of Golfweek’s 10 strict standards of evaluation. Collectively, these knowledgeable raters have turned in more than 75,000 votes to compile Golfweek’s Best Courses lists. Ballots submitted by Golfweek raters during their visits over the prior year compiled the current rankings of the ‘Best Courses You Can Play’ in each state
