Rules Of Golf Changes For 2008 Set By USGA And R&A

The U.S. Golf Association and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club announce that, beginning in 2008, a golfer will be allowed to lift a ball for identification in a bunker or water hazard. However, there now will be a two-stroke penalty for playing a wrong ball from a hazard. In match play, the penalty will be loss of hole. This rule is among the amendments agreed upon on by the two associations.

USGA Executive Committee Slate Nominated For 2008

James F. Vernon of Pasadena, Calif., has been nominated to serve a one-year term as president of the U.S. Golf Association by the nominating committee of the USGA. The election of officers and the full 15-member USGA Executive Committee will take place Feb. 9.

Nationwide Insurance and the PGA Tour announce the "Birdies for Relief" program at the Nationwide Tour Championship in Lakeside, Calif. The program will donate a minimum of $200,000 to the Red Cross Fire Relief Fund, which has been established to provide direct support to victims of last week’s fires throughout San Diego County and other parts of southern California.
