BOBBY JONES GOLF COURSE TO HOST INAUGURAL GSGA ADAPTIVE GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP
Atlanta Course Showcases Commitment to Adaptive Golf with Historic Tournament on October 22-24
Bobby Jones Golf Course is pleased to announce that it will host the Inaugural Georgia State Golf Association Adaptive Golf Championship on October 22-24, 2019. The GSGA Adaptive Golf Championship will serve as the first adaptive golf championship event in the United States to be organized by an allied golf association. The event will welcome 60 of the world’s best adaptive golfers as they compete in a 36-hole championship at the newly renovated Bobby Jones Golf Course in Atlanta, Ga.
Practice rounds begin at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 22, followed by an opening ceremony at Capital City Club in Brookhaven. The first round of the Georgia State Golf Association Adaptive Golf Championship will take place on Wednesday, October 23 at 8:00 a.m. followed by a post-round player reception and will continue Thursday, October 24 at 8:00 am for the final round and trophy presentation.
“This tournament embodies the commitment of all of us at Bobby Jones Golf Course to adaptive golf,” said Chuck Palmer, Chairman of the Bobby Jones Golf Course Foundation and a former President of the GSGA. “Specifically designed to accommodate adaptive golfers, the Bobby Jones Golf Course’s focus on making the game of golf accessible to all pays homage to the great Bobby Jones who spent the latter years of his life in a wheelchair.”
The course also serves as the home base for the Georgia State Golf Association’s adaptive golf program, a curriculum that will be shared with other facilities across the state. In addition, the course has partnered with the nationally renowned Shepherd Center to provide instruction and golf rounds to their program participants. Bobby Jones Golf Course currently hosts two free adaptive golf clinics each month in partnership with GSGA and the Shepherd Center. The entire Grand Slam Golf Academy instructional staff has been trained in adaptive golf to better instruct players during the monthly clinics and is available for private lessons.
Future plans for the adaptive golf program at Bobby Jones Golf Course include hosting a small fleet of adaptive golf carts to allow adaptive golfers to play the course at their convenience. Additionally, Bobby Jones Golf Course will build and utilize dedicated comfort stations and a special covered awning at the North Tee of the PGA TOUR Superstore Practice Facility to provide a protected instructional experience for the adaptive golf clinics.
All proceeds of the tournament will benefit the GSGA Adaptive Golf Program, which provides complimentary golf instruction to individuals with physical, cognitive and sensory challenges. In its third year of operation, the Adaptive Golf Program serves individuals of all ages with access to equipment and instruction at sites throughout the state. The mission of the program is to empower individuals with physical and cognitive impairments to enhance one’s life through the game of golf.
“We are honored to host the inaugural GSGA Adaptive Golf Championship at Bobby Jones Golf Course,” said Brian Conley, General Manager of Bobby Jones Golf Course. “This championship brings in some of the best talent from around the world and coincides with our commitment to making the game of golf accessible to all. Through special training and programing, Bobby Jones Golf Course is proud to be at the forefront of the adaptive golf movement in the state of Georgia.”
The GSGA Adaptive Golf Championship is open to players from all disability categories with a nationally recognized golf handicap index and an Access Pass or WR4GD Pass. GSGA membership and Georgia residency are not requirements. The cost to participate is $275.00 per player for this competition, with cart, greens fees, and some meals included. Participants can register online at the Georgia State Golf Association’s website at https://www.golfgenius.com/register?league_id=159552 . The event is also open for spectators with food and beverages available for purchase on-site.
Various sponsorship levels are available for corporate supporters. Sponsorship incentives vary per level; however, each sponsorship will include a plated dinner at the opening ceremony event and advertising space on the championship website, scoring and pairing pages.
