Bridgestone Golf will match Bryson’s contribution to 9/11 charity during TOUR Championship
East Lake GC, Atlanta, Ga. – As the 20th anniversary of 9/11 draws near, Bryson DeChambeau has decided to honor first responders and military veterans by donating $1,000 for every birdie he makes during the TOUR Championship (with a $10k minimum donation) to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. Always interested in supporting American heroes, DeChambeau feels strongly about taking a moment to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice. “The people who acted heroically on 9/11 are true patriots and it’s all of our duty to honor them appropriately,” said DeChambeau. “I truly hope this initiative will inspire people to support real American heroes and their families.”
The genesis of Tunnel to Towers Foundation is the story of New York firefighter Stephen Gerard Siller, who at the time of the 9/11 attacks was actually done with his shift and on his way to play golf with his brothers. When the 34-year-old Siller heard that a plane had struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center he immediately returned to his station, retrieved his gear, and headed toward downtown Manhattan. Siller found the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel closed for security purposes, but instead of turning around and going home, strapped on his 60 lbs. of gear and jogged to the Twin Towers, where he was lost while trying to save others. The foundation, which is located in Staten Island, NY, has a mission to honor Stephen’s memory by supporting military veterans and first responders and their families. To date, Tunnel to Towers Foundation has raised over $250 million as well as 450 mortgage-free homes (delivered or in progress) for the families of American heroes.
In support of DeChambeau’s initiative, Bridgestone Golf will match the donation of $1,000 per birdie the former US Open champion makes during the TOUR Championship, with the same $10,000 minimum donation. As a further bonus, if DeChambeau makes a hole-in-one during the tournament, a donation of $100,000 will be made by American Hole ‘n One.
“Bryson has come up with an outstanding idea,” said Dan Murphy, President and CEO of Bridgestone Golf. “Tunnel to Towers Foundation is a great cause and we’re proud to join Bryson in honoring American heroes and their families.”
