THE CLUBS AT ST. JAMES PLANTATION GOLF PROFESSIONAL BEN WILSON SELECTED TO PLAY IN 2019 BUSH INSTITUTE WARRIOR OPEN
Southport, North Carolina – The Clubs at St. James Plantation Assistant Golf Professional Ben Wilson has been selected to play in the 2019 Bush Institute Warrior Open, presented by AT&T, a competitive golf tournament that honors post-9/11 U.S. service members seriously wounded or injured since September 11, 2001. The Warrior Open will be held May 5-6, 2019, just before the AT&T Byron Nelson PGA TOUR event held May 8-12 at Trinity Forest Golf Club in Dallas, Texas. Wilson is one of 24 “warriors” selected to play in this year’s tournament.
The Bush Institute Warrior Open features an 18-hole competition open only to the 24 warriors on Sunday, May 5th and an 18-hole pro-am, including PGA TOUR professionals and warriors, on Monday, May 6th.
Sergeant Wilson, U.S. Marine Corps, retired, enlisted in the Marine Corp in 2003. For three months, he served as an ammo tech in a reserve unit. He transferred to active duty and deployed to Iraq as a LAAD gunner in support of the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit. In 2009, he was deployed once again to Iraq. During that deployment, Wilson was injured when the building he was standing near obtained indirect fire. Wilson experienced a blast-related head trauma. During another convoy patrol, he sustained a traumatic brain injury when the vehicles ahead of his hit an improvised explosive device and an RKG-3 anti-tank grenade. He medically retired from active duty in 2016. For his service, he has been awarded many awards and ribbons.
Wilson has used the game of golf to deal with military-related issues and to reach struggling veterans. During his first month of retirement, he began working at The Clubs at St. James Plantation in Southport, North Carolina as an assistant golf professional. He is currently working on becoming a PGA professional and is an active member of the Veteran Golfers Association and many other military golf organizations teaching veterans the game of golf. Wilson is also active in fundraisers for military organizations, including the Folds of Honor Foundation.
