Cape Fear National to Undergo Massive Course Renovations
North Carolina golf club looks to come back even stronger after Hurricane Florence
Cape Fear National – the award winning Tim Cate-designed course just outside Wilmington, North Carolina – will undergo a comprehensive renovation of their greens and bunkers to raise its admired regional reputation to new heights.
The extensive project, overseen by Billy Casper Golf, features converting its greens from bent grass to hybrid Bermuda grass and restoring each sand bunker to its original integrity prior to Hurricane Florence. While the bunker project is already underway, Cape Fear began re-surfacing their greens on June 3 and will re-open on September 2, 2019. These enhancements are part of the largest overhaul in the club’s history.
“The Wilmington community was effected by Hurricane Florence in so many ways and one was enjoying the game of golf on the North Carolina coast,” says Kris Reinert, general manager of Cape Fear National. “We look forward to bringing back our course better than ever and remaining a top golf destination in the Southeast.”
Built in 2010, Cape Fear National offers a first-class experience winding through heavily undulating land and features several bridges through wetlands, three waterfalls, beach bunkers, all flanked by native southeast North Carolina grasses and wildflowers. With five sets of tees, the beautiful layout tests guests of all playing abilities with the championship tees measuring at a formidable 7,217 yards.
“Tim Cate was given the task to build the best golf course in the Wilmington market and exceeded expectations,” says Paul Hughes, superintendent of Cape Fear National. “He was given the resources to create a challenging, visually-stunning layout and now with the guidance of Billy Casper Golf, we look forward to making sure everyone can enjoy their experience here for years to come.”
In 2019, Billy Casper Golf will celebrate its 30th anniversary of full-service course management, which includes nearly 150 properties in 29 states. Other BCG-managed courses in North Carolina include Bradford Creek Golf Course, Cypress Landing Golf Club and Harbour Pointe Golf Club.
