Casa de Campo Resort & Villas to Host ‘Tar Heel Classic by Suzy Whaley’
Elite Women’s College Golf Teams to Compete on Pete Dye’s Celebrated Teeth of the Dog
Casa de Campo Resort & Villas – home to the Caribbean’s premier, luxury golf experiences – will host the “Tar Heel Classic by Suzy Whaley” featuring elite college golf teams competing on Pete Dye’s celebrated Teeth of the Dog course, March 14 – 16.
Contested over 54 holes, the prestigious field of universities includes host North Carolina as well as Colorado, Florida Atlantic, Louisville, LSU, Maryland, N.C. State, Ohio State, Mississippi, Quinnipiac, TCU, UNCW, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. Whaley is an alumna of the University of North Carolina and was recently elected as the first woman President of the PGA of America.
Since opening in 1970, Teeth of the Dog is widely recognized as the No. 1 course in the Caribbean. The dramatic seaside layout showcases Dye’s design hallmarks: railroad ties, vast waste areas, peninsula greens and tees, hand-sculpted putting surfaces and a unique assortment of pot bunkers. The oceanfront holes are astoundingly beautiful, causing Dye to famously quip: “I created 11 holes and God created seven.”
“We’re honored to showcase these esteemed college golf teams on Teeth of the Dog,” says Gilles Gagnon, Casa de Campo’s senior golf sales director and director of golf emeritus. “Many of the players are ranked among the finest amateurs in the U.S. and we look forward to the thrilling competition on one of the world’s finest courses.”
The teams will also have full use of the new Casa de Campo Golf Learning Center. Residing on 21 acres of “pure grass,” the PGA Tour-quality facility is highlighted by Trackman and BODITRAK technology. It features two indoor hitting bays for rapid game improvement, year-round training, individual and group golf lessons and schools, expert club-fitting and repair, and multiple practice greens for honing putting, chipping and pitching games as well as a pristine double-sided outdoor range for full shots.
