CASA VERDE GOLF COMPLETES GREEN RELOCATION AT FLORENCE GOLF LINKS
New position of Hole 7 green prohibits further threat of migrating sand dunes at Central Oregon favorite
Scottsdale-based Casa Verde Golf recently completed a relocation of the green on the Par-5 7th hole at Florence Golf Links, located on the Central Oregon coast. The existing green location was exposed to adjacent sand dunes which have encroached significantly over the years and created reoccurring maintenance demands beyond standard practices in order to keep at bay while also still providing optimal playing conditions.
“After years of battling to maintain the playability of the last 100 yards of hole 7, we decided to relocate the green to an area that would not be in the path of the actively moving dune,” said Eli McGallian, Golf Course Superintendent of Florence Golf Links. “In other words, we fought the dune, and the dune won. Casa Verde Golf was instrumental in the design and completion of the new green complex.”
“This was a ‘must-do’ situation for the Club,” said Jeff Schwinkendorf, Vice President of Casa Verde Golf. “Luckily, an option existed which allowed us to alter the hole minimally, with little-to-no impact to strategy and general aesthetics.”
The decision was made amongst Ownership and OB Sports Golf Course Management Company, that the best step to avoid future concern was to bring the green approximately 100 yards closer to the tees where a portion of the fairway is protected by an existing tree line along the northern border, providing a buffer between the new green location and the looming sand dunes to the north.
The scope of work included the clearing and disposal of turf throughout the half-acre swath of area in which the new green is located, complete reshaping of its expanse, performing requisite irrigation modifications, finish work, seedbed prep and eventually sodding in its entirety.
