When a retired Ohio firefighter with a knack for bartending went looking for a warmer climate and a wedding venue he might buy, he headed south to Alabama.
How he ended up buying and turning around the failing Cumberland Lake and Lodge outside Birmingham is the intriguing story Alabama Golf News tells this week.
“I didn’t realize how much the golf course market had plummeted to where a middle-class kind of guy could afford a golf course,” Cumberland Lake’s owner, John Faler, told the website.

“All of a sudden, I have a gigantic overhead whether one golfer comes or a hundred. The lights still have to be on and the grass still has to be mowed, chemicals have to be applied,” he said.
Five years on, Cumberland Lake is prospering and Faler has expanded the wedding banquet hall he went shopping for back in 2016. Read the story here.
