Desert Highlands to Enhance Its Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course
Renovated Cart Paths and Bunkers, Updated Irrigation System, Revamped 13th Hole All Part of $7 Million Project
Desert Highlands – the acclaimed luxury golf club and community in the stunning Sonoran Desert of North Scottsdale – will embark on a $7 million project to enhance its Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course.
Construction will begin next month on the updates, which include renovating every bunker on the course, revamping the 13th hole, installing a new irrigation system and restoring cart paths. During the timeframe, nine holes will remain open for members during the project, which is scheduled for completion this summer.
A new drainage system featuring Capillary Concrete will be employed for optimal drainage and reduction of wash-outs during inclement weather. The Bunker Solution linings will be used for bunker faces to prevent sand contamination, and to reduce migration while maintaining design characteristics. New sand that complements the Sonoran Desert landscape will be installed to complete the restoration.
Nicklaus Design will spearhead minor renovations to the 13th hole, a par-4 highlighted by the desert landscape splitting the fairway into two landing areas. The changes, overseen by Jon Gardner will make the left fairway more generous while lengthening the carry to the right fairway. In addition, the greenside bunker on the left will be smaller, while the front-right portion of the putting surface will become more accessible. The makeover will restore No. 13 to its original playing characteristics and create a more exciting risk-and-reward hole.
Also highlighting the project is the installation of a new irrigation system throughout the golf course, which will help maintain Desert Highlands’ superior conditioning. In addition, restoration work will be done to the cart paths meandering throughout the course.
“Desert Highlands is committed to maintaining our award-winning golf course,” says General Manager Monty Becton. “These upgrades not only will strengthen the playability of the golf course, but also enrich its captivating landscape.”
Considered one of Scottsdale’s elite golf club communities, Desert Highlands recently welcomed a new and talented executive team for 2019, highlighted by Becton and Chief Financial Officer Lisa Hutcherson. Also joining the Desert Highlands leadership team: Joan Sykora, Director of Member Relations and Sales; Todd Allison, Executive Chef; and Ron Koohbanani, Assistant General Manager.
