The East Bay, California private club’s new project follows a nationally-lauded $12 million golf course renovation — representing a combined $34 million in recent updates.
Diablo Country Club in Diablo, California has broken ground on a $22 million renovation and enhancement project across all areas of Club operations, to complete a Facilities Master Plan approved by its members.
The new project, expected to be completed in Spring 2024, will finish out a total of $34 million the Club has committed recently to enhance DCC’s membership experience for “generations to come.” The first phase of the Club’s Facilities Master Plan was an award-winning $12 million renovation and upgrade to Diablo’s golf course, completed in 2020.
The new phase of this effort begins now with renovations to Diablo’s historic Clubhouse featuring updates to the Red Horse Tavern and other dining areas; reinvigorated private event areas, the addition of a new Diablo Pub; and main-kitchen renovations to add more culinary amenities.
A companion construction phase includes construction of a new Fitness Center; renovations to the Tennis Pavilion, Child Care Center, and Ladies’ Locker Room and Lounge; new permanent Bocce Ball courts; and a new indoor Golf Simulator. DCC has completed an extensive range of strategic demolition work since the project was approved by the membership, which should help expedite the construction schedule.
“This is an exciting time at Diablo and our recent accomplishments and new projects demonstrably affirm our compelling history and distinctive membership experience,” said Bruce Pruitt CCM, CCE; Diablo Country Club’s General Manager & Chief Operating Officer. “We’re ushering in a decidedly modern reinvention of our golf-focused and family-forward Club lifestyle, and continue to burnish our reputation as one of the most desirable private clubs in the East Bay.”
The Club’s $12 million golf course renovation earned national recognition by Golf Inc. when it was completed. The project garnered the “2021 Renovation Of The Year” award, securing the top position for private clubs in the magazine’s annual competition.
An independent panel of industry experts highlighted DCC’s success in restoring the look and feel of the 100-plus-year-old golf course, paying homage to the original design by Jack Neville and William Watson, architects of Pebble Beach and Olympic Club, among other well-known layouts.
Diablo’s golf course has since been ranked #18 in the “Best Courses In California” list and one of the “50 Best In The West” for 2023 by GOLF Magazine based on that restoration effort.
“The renovated course is a tangible daily reminder of the other great things in the works at Diablo,” Pruitt said. “With the upcoming enhancements and updates to the Clubhouse and addition of a new Wellness Center among other amenities, Diablo will continue to be a best-in-class lifestyle experience for the entire family, and one that will be enjoyed for generations to come.”
Pruitt also noted that Diablo’s award-winning golf experience, tennis and pickleball programming, aquatics and pool offerings, Bocce Ball play, and food and beverage services are continuing without interruption for Members and guests during the renovations.
Culinary offerings are highlighted by innovations including full-meal service at the Jack Neville Snack Shack, and “Willie’s Place” — a new kitchen on wheels named in honor of DCC’s visionary golf course co-designer, the new “Red Horse Tavern Too” pop-up lounge, and special off-campus brunch and lunch services available on Wednesdays and weekends.
Complimentary off-campus fitness memberships are also available to DCC Members during this time, as well as continuing group exercise classes hosted on campus.
Select social events and family-focused experiences fill the Club’s full schedule of activities throughout the coming year, ranging from wine dinners to BBQ cookouts, burger nights and movie nights, family events, and holiday celebrations.
“With all of these projects, updates, innovations, and services either already live or coming online, we are excited about the opportunity to share the many great stories about the Diablo Country Club experience — and the wonderful community of Members that create what we call the ‘Diablo Difference’,” Pruitt said.
About Diablo Country Club
Founded in 1914 as California’s first family club by Bay Area visionary Robert Noble Burgess, Diablo was created as “A Community with an Ideal” founded on the values of friendship, camaraderie, active lifestyles, and authentic connection.
The Club gained early national prominence with an original golf course design created by the future architects of Pebble Beach and Olympic Club, Jack Neville and William Watson. The only course in the world co-designed by Neville and Watson, Diablo has held to this tradition of golfing excellence ever since, hosting Professional Exhibitions, the Northern California Open Championship, USGA Amateur Championship qualifiers, and US Senior Open qualifiers.
Diablo has also evolved as a complete-lifestyle club for area residents and their families, featuring well-regarded racquet sports facilities, outstanding culinary and wine experiences, fitness and aquatics programs, and a variety of activities for youth and adults.
