Dino Canepa shares his golfing experience across Colombia in Magazin Golf, signaling growing interest in the country’s golf tourism potential.
Bogotá, Colombia: Colombia is steadily making its mark on the international golf scene, earning coverage in prestigious outlets such as Switzerland’s Magazin Golf and Canadian golf media. Renowned Swiss golf journalist Dino Canepa recently visited Colombia to explore the country’s emerging golf landscape, bringing global attention to its potential as a golf destination.
Canepa, Executive Director of Golf and Member of the Board at House of Swiss Golf AG, chronicled his experiences golfing in Colombia in Magazin Golf‘s first 2024 edition and the Golf Italia website. His trip showcased five notable courses: El Rincón de Cajicá, San Andrés Golf Club, Club de Golf La Cima, Country Club de Bogotá, and Club Karibana Cartagena. Reflecting on his time at El Rincón de Cajicá, Canepa wrote: “In my opinion, it’s the best golf course in Colombia and an ideal introduction to golf culture in South America.”
Colombia’s diverse geography adds unique appeal to its golf tourism. The country offers ideal year-round golf conditions and a rare opportunity to play at various altitudes—from Bogotá’s high-altitude courses to the Caribbean coastline in Cartagena—all within a matter of days. “Where else in the world can you play golf at 3,000 meters above sea level one day and at sea level the next?” Canepa remarked in his article.
Despite Colombia’s past challenges with crime, Canepa emphasized the significant progress the country has made in recent years: “Colombia has made immense progress in recent decades and is now safer and more welcoming to visitors from around the world than ever before.” He also noted that bustling cities like Bogotá and Cartagena offer vibrant culture, excellent dining, and rich history, adding depth to the travel experience beyond the golf courses.
While Colombia’s private golf clubs offer world-class facilities, access remains a challenge for international tourists, as many clubs require invitations or special arrangements. Language barriers also complicate the experience, with few caddies speaking English. Fortunately, Canepa’s visit was facilitated by Pelecanus, a Bogotá-based boutique tour operator specializing in custom Colombia golf tours and luxury travel.
Frank Spitzer, founder of Pelecanus, emphasized the growing international interest in Colombia’s golf offerings: “As Colombia gains recognition on the world stage, more travelers are discovering the unique golf experiences this country has to offer. It’s rewarding to see Colombia emerge as an unexpected player in golf tourism.”
Dino Canepa’s article positions Colombia as a destination that combines golf with adventure, culture, and world-class hospitality. As international coverage of Colombian golf continues to grow, the country is poised to attract more golf enthusiasts seeking new, unexplored destinations.
