Edison Golf Founder, Terry Koehler, explains the importance of distance gapping in wedges.
ROCKPORT, TX, – Edison Golf, a company dedicated to revolutionizing wedge performance for recreational golfers, announces that its EDISON 2.0 wedges are available in 16 different lofts.
EDISON 2.0 wedges are engineered in odd-numbered lofts only, but they can be ordered in every loft from 45 to 60 degrees. If golfers select even-numbered lofts when placing an order, the wedges will be tweaked 1-degree weaker (i.e. a 58-degree wedge will have 57 on the sole, etc.).
“We engineered the EDISON 2.0 wedges to odd-number lofts because this weighting technology delivers lower, more penetrating launch angles and increased distance over conventional “tour-design” wedges,” said Terry Koehler, Chairman and Director of Innovation at Edison Golf. “An EDISON 2.0 53-degree wedge, for example, will launch the same or lower than other 52-degree wedges for most golfers, so you get your normal distance (or more) but have more loft around the greens to make your scoring shots stop quicker.”
Koehler, who also writes a popular weekly blog as The Wedge Guy on GolfWRX.com, has spent more than 40 years designing golf clubs. His work in wedges dates to 1990 with his patented sole design, which incorporated two distinct bounce angles in the sole of each wedge to deliver versatility for any lie and swing path. Shortly thereafter, he pioneered raising the CG (center of mass) of wedges with Reid Lockhart®, and his EIDOLON® wedges of the early 2000s were the first to introduce CNC-milled grooves in mainstream wedges. Koehler’s wedge design breakthroughs were further advanced with his progressive weighting technology in the SCOR™ wedges of 2011-2014 and the Ben Hogan® TK wedges of 2015-2017.
In a recent blog post on GolfWRX.com, Koehler discussed the importance of optimizing your scoring range performance by getting consistent and reliable distance gapping in your prime scoring clubs, which includes all your clubs of about 37-38 degrees of loft and higher. He often gets asked, “How many wedges should I carry?”
According to Koehler, “You need to carry as many wedges as it takes to give you consistent and controllable distance differentials from that first scoring iron all the way down to your shortest ‘full swing’ wedge.
“If you have access to a quality launch monitor, you can work through the higher-loft end of your bag to get accurate and repeatable carry distances and spin rates for each of your prime scoring clubs. You should be seeking 10- to 12-yard full swing distance differentials in that range, so that you can reliably select the iron or wedge that will fly the desired distance without much swing manipulation.
“If you see gaps that are excessively smaller or larger than that ideal ten to twelve yards, you can adjust your loft gapping and/or shaft length slightly to open or close them to your goal.
“The key to better scoring is, in prime conditions, to know your distances to the letter with all your high-loft clubs, whether they be wedges or short irons. You should be regularly re-visiting and evaluating your gapping as you get new irons or work on improving your technique.”

Introduced in 2020, the original Edison Forged wedges significantly improved wedge performance by dramatically changing the way mass was distributed across the back of the clubhead. In the EDISON 2.0 line of wedges for 2023, an additional 14-17 grams have been positioned even higher in the clubhead, achieved by creation of a multi-level back design that optimizes smash factor across the face. This repositioning also creates a fresh and distinctive visual appeal to the product.
All EDISON 2.0 wedges are backed by the Company’s 30-Day Risk Free Trial. The Edison craftsmen will build you any EDISON 2.0 wedge and let you put it to the test on your course, hitting the variety of shots you face every round. If for any reason it’s not the best wedge you’ve ever played, Edison Golf will buy it back.
EDISON 2.0 wedges are custom built for each golfer from a wide selection of premium KBS® shafts and Lamkin® grips. Standard pricing is $199.95 for steel shaft wedges and $214.95 for graphite shafts. Shipping is always free, and discounts are applied on orders for full sets of three or more. The shopping experience is clean and easy on the company’s website at www.EdisonWedges.com.
About Edison Golf Company
Edison Golf Company was formed in 2018 to provide a platform for development of the Edison Forged wedges. Over the past 30 years, Chairman/Director of Innovation, Terry Koehler has raised the bar for wedge performance multiple times through his designs bearing the names Merit® Golf, Reid Lockhart®, EIDOLON®, SCOR™ and Ben Hogan®. He has repeatedly conducted robotic and live golfer testing of the top brands of ‘tour design’ wedges in his quest to improve golfer’s scoring range performance. Edison wedges were born from the scientific proof that poor distance control, insufficient spin and excessively high ball flight are built into the traditional ‘tour design’ that is reflected in nearly every wedge in the industry today. The company insists on the highest quality components and workmanship and all Edison wedges are custom-built to order for each customer from the Company’s assembly and shipping operations center in Rockport, Texas.
